theoretically possible. The focus ST tops out at 149 mph (limited) but you'd need a long stretch of road to get there.

Yesterday I hit 125 in mine (Stealth ES). :D I also only have 3 gears :( I was wondering if anyone else has done this: I used the game Forza Motorsport to estimate my top speed. I used a car that was similar in HP, TQ, and Weight, and I also changed the gear ratios so that it shifted when my car does. In the game it said that the top speed was around 135. That seems pretty accurate to me because when I was going 125 I was at about 6,000RPMs. So does that sound reasonable? Or am I just ******ed for doing that.

actually, I did indeed manage 150 kph in a town centre in the southern part of the netherlands. It was a difficult situation and a medical emergency wrapped in one.

The difficult situation (and decicion to take) was that I was rather interested in the person who was actually having this medical emergency (suffocation) so I took her friends car (metallic green matiz) and flew over to the emergency station to have her serviced and not have the start of a promising evening spoiled.

In the end it was not worth it after all. Did not get a speeding ticket though.

Now cornering at speeds over 100 kph in a Matiz, that's scary

my dads hit 137mph in our Focus ST with me in it on the way to the airport, but says he has hit the full 150mph when he was taking his friend Steve to the airport. and yeah, dont worry, this was at like 5 in the morning on a motorway, so it was absolutely deserted, nothing around, no danger. while u are on a motorway bored out of your head, blasting the throttle for a bit is fun, i always suggest it to my dad :D lol

when u go that fast its crazy.. u hear the wind whistling over the windscreen and the rumble from the tires is soooo loud, u feel the slightest bumps (running over an ant would probly send u 5 foot into the air.. haha)

Yes, exact oddball numbers. It usually has to do with someone looking up the top speed of a car in a magazine and saying things like "the fastest I went was 158.48572365 mph, in the rain with the windows open"... lol

I've driven cars and bikes at severely stupid speeds and if you're going that fast and are brave enough to take your eyes off the road long enough to pinpoint where the speedo needle is then you shouldn't be going that fast...

oddball numbers mostly because I remember the speeds roughly in km/h like: roughly 150, over 150, over 160 kph etc. Then translate to mph to keep it understandable.
Mostly even post double indication both in mph and kph. That does sometimes result in odd numbers.

I don't know if other people do the same but I mark my speeds in kph since the signs over here request me to drive 50kph on the left side of the road, 50 kph on the right side as well but still not 100kph in the middle of teh road

if the kink in the highway isn't too sharp it's better to stay on the gas. When you let go of the gas pedal the weight of the car will momentarily shift to the front wheels and the rear will from there on spin away, especially with RWD or a front heavy FWD car. I tried with a merc 190 2.5 liter (not the evo unfortunately) and it kicked in a very mean way.

Oh yah, I know what you mean by that. When I went 85 in the Suburban around that kink (actually it's a smooth kink with some curve in it, almost like a low banking corner), I actually let off and felt the car suddenly shift over and I was like, "Whoa!"

Oh yeah, the other time I tried to go 100 in my car, at around 75 - 80, it started to wobble a little bit from the wind. When I did it yesterday, my car was surprisingly still. But I guess my car is front-heavy enough to keep steady (the only weight in the back is the spare tire, jack and the battery).

the solitaire
Oct 13, 2006, 1:24 PM
yep. The merc is a rather mean bit of machinery in that respect.
The suspension, in contrast to the 500 evos that were produced, is rather wobbly.

Car is a bit heavier as well.
It still has a lot of torque and power though and it has an rpm limiter and a speed limiter.

The speed limiter cuts in at some 250 kph according to the tach. It does so somewhere in the top half of the rpm range though and the car has a lot of torque there so one moment it's pushing you forward, the next all power to the wheels is gone. Had that happening in one of those kinks you describe. More like a wide 30 degree bend in the road, over a bridge so you have reduced traction as well. Put the car sideways, fortunately at 23.00 in the evening so teh road was rather deserted (otherwise I would not have pulled such a stunt anyways) but fortunately, after coasting a bit power was returned and as long as I kept the needle under the indicated 250 kph the car was offering enough power to steer it true.

Actually had the same situation @ 190 kph with the 1.8 liter version of the same car.

When you let go of the gas pedal the weight of the car will momentarily shift to the front wheels and the rear will from there on spin away.I rolled a car that way. It was the first time I had ever taken a rear engine car through Ortega. And it was my dad's car! lol... Never, ever, EVER, hit the brakes inside a curve.

A few years back my dad and I were at Terminal Island with his Camaro. He was running in the 10.20 Pro Street bracket. He staged against a Corvette that was in a quicker bracket. My dad took off and a second or so later the Corvette left the line. My dad was about 3/4 track when he looked in his mirror and saw the Corvette slow down. He blew something (don't know what). Anyway, my dad was afraid he was going to break out so he tapped the brakes... at over 100. The car still had drum brakes in the back. The back end slid out and he went through the traps sideways! hehe... Be careful with brakes...

E-TEC 4
Oct 13, 2006, 2:23 PM
^ Now I almost wonder if my car could do that since it only has power brakes and no traction control (not to say that I'll intentionally do it).

the solitaire
Oct 13, 2006, 3:03 PM
this has nothing to do with either powerbrakes or tration control. It's physics.
Of course traction control does help to prevent such reactions partially but the gravitational centre of the car will move forward when braking which will invariably lessen load on the rear axle and increase the tendency to oversteer.

monkeyfkker
Oct 13, 2006, 5:21 PM
Exactly... My dad's Camaro had power brakes. The only reason that happened to him was because the rear brakes weren't adjusted right. I only told that story because I think it's funny! lol

Any car, even with traction control, power brakes, abs, whatever... can spin out or roll if you brake too hard into a curve. One of the first things you learn in racing school is the braking line. You ALWAYS brake before a turn.

fastest i drove was only 105 but take this into consideration

i only had my license for about 2 months and i drive a 92 tercel...yes..a 92 lol and it has 217k miles on it (the epidome of reliability in toyotas)

anyways like i said i went 105 when the top speed on my car is about 110 hahah yeah... my car didnt' really feel all that great when i got on the off ramp and pressed the accelerator after the stop sign hahaha

it took me about a min almost to get from 100 to 105 on my car..i must hav ebeen acceleration at like a tenth of a mile persecond or soemthing haha, reason behind why i redlined my 217k mile 92? because i was bored that day and i felt like breaking my records that day hahaha

I went 120+ yesterday when I was comming home from my friends house at 10pm. I stopped looking at the needle after 120 because I knew that there was a stop sign soon so I was just looking straight ahead. I love country roads w/o cops! :D

Trust me, you didn't redline it in high gear

mayb he had the clutch in lol,
i did about 110mph in my old escort, it was begging to stop and screaming in pain, once i could see the roundabout ahead i braked not realising the brakes were very schite and had teh entire car pull to the right and sway across a dual carrigeway that was scary tring to eep on the brakes and keep the car from sliding

That's cause you're a crazy nut! lol... Yeah, the only way to redline a car like his in high gear is to ride the clutch like you said! lol

An intake, exhaust, and chip won't make it do 187. I live in Kansas I know about the highways in OK. How do you know you were doing 187?

When you go that fast, you arn't looking at the speedometer to see exactly how fast you're going. You have to watch out for sudden corners, traffic, cops, and keep your car steady at these speeds.
I call BS.

About 10mph, in a shopping cart, being pushed by a mate, while drunk. That's the fastest I've been because I haven't driven in about 6 weeks.

101 mph in my Civic tonight.

Passed two highway Patrol officers and they didn't do anything. There afraid of my automatic Civic dusting them.

Did ya hit any obstacles and fly out of the cart?

no kiddin i passed a cop at over 100 and i saw tha cops turnin round i was dumb enough to keep goin though and those cop cars are alot faster than an "automatic civic" unless you were in second gear they would dust you.
