BMW is considering building a small crossover positioned below the X3, according to a report by German magazine Auto Zeitung. Tentatively called the X1, the proposed utility vehicle would be based on the 1-Series platform.


BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer told the magazine such a vehicle would arrive on the market by 2010, with a sales target of around 100,000 units annually. It would feature the same x-drive all-wheel-drive system as the X3, with a combination of components from the 1-Series and X3.


Reithofer also mentioned successors to the Z8 and M1 are "the type of products we need in the future."
How pointless would an X1 be, honestly, as if the X3 wasn't bad enough. But, there is something positive to take from this article:

i dont really care, if they do make one, it will sell... jst like most bimmers, and should be a great handler.. but what will it go against, cos the X3 has the RAV4 and those small city AWD's covered, this ones made, just to be made!!

Clarkson proved the X3 is crap off road so the X1 will not be ugly like all BMWS but will be crap off road so wat is the point ???

Truth be told, it will be exactly like the X3. Even though it will be terrible in every conceivable way (bar handling), it will sell by the millions, by people that buy it just so they can say that they own a BMW.

Seems pretty pointless. Car makers always have to find new niches and make models that don't really live up to their reputation? The X3 wasn't that good a car, and it probably never will be, so I'm not really expecting this one to be either. If it is, congratulations, well done to them, but if it's not, there will be a ''I told you so'' from a lot of people. I reckon it will sell though. The default car for many people in any market is probably a BMW.

I think that pretty much rounds up my point of view exactly, frankly. If at least they were good looking.........no, even if they were beautiful, I wouldn't want yet another 4x4 from them, especially not one this small.

you guys ready for the F5 and F3 from BMW? BMW is gonna start making "sporty" vans dubbed the F3 and F5. they're supposed to have the versatility and space of a van, with road manners similar to a 3-series.

it soon might be cool to own a van. except for the people that put sofas and shag carpet in their vans. those will always be cool.

That's the thing that really annoys me. People who buy garbage like this just so that they can say "Look everyone, I have a BMW, aren't I cool. Wow look at the size of my penis, It gets bigger everytime I tell someone about my car."

Also, I am not having a go at all BMWs/ BMW drivers. I am the first to admit that they do make some excellent cars: The M1,3,5,6 & Z4, but it's the rubbish cars that sell by the truckload, bought purely for the badge that make me angry, and you wouldn't like me when i'm angry... (this is the part where I turn green and run around in my purple boxer shorts)

the X3 had absolutely no point to it whatsoever.
it didnt look very good. its gets mowed down in a spoonful of mud, its slow as shite, its quite expensive, and falls apart.....
no why would anyone buy something even worse?

There you go mate, all fixed. Sorry if I offended. As it said before I fixed it all up, I wasn't saying that all BMW drivers are wankers, just the people that buy one so they can say that they own one. For example, people who buy a standard 320i (6spd Manual = $51 000AU) over something like a VE Commodore SV6 (Specced out 6spd Man = $54,298.75AU), they're the ones that really annoy me. Anyways, hope that has sorted things out.
