...well, sort of. It seems that VW is still selling the Golf MkI in Sudafrica, updated over the years and renamed as CitiGolf now it gets its sport version. Powered by a 1.8 engine with 122 bhp the CitiGolf 1.8i R is capable of 193 km/h top speed and 0-100 km/h time of 8.6 sec. It still gets some new gadgets the original Golf didn't have like on board computer, mp3 player and a completely new dashboard directly from a Skoda Fabia...but you don't get ABS or Airbags. The price 114.770 rands (11.762 €/ 15.732 dollars)

Looks like a Mk2 from the front. The interiors the same as any other new VW/Skoda/Audi really, and that steering wheel would need replacing cos its fugly. But i'd love one, i like the R badge on the front, and its RHD :D

My god!!!
I am sure if they produce it in europr again with the same shape but new mechanicals, it will be a success

u kno what i just realised, this could potentially devalue of all the original GTI's, theres gona be a load of new ones with better components and updated parts etc etc so who in their right mind unless ur a complete enthusiast will buy an old one? I personally would buy a new one and tune it rather than buy an old high miler.

That car is so cool. You get the old car's looks, with new car mod cons. I agree with idin, if they sold this in Europe, it would sell like hotcakes. It has the style/aura of the GTIs of old, but it is modernised on the inside. It's kind of like the whole "digging up old cars that were popular and making them again" theme that has been happening for the last couple of years (new Camaro, Challenger, Beetle, Ford GT etc), except that this car never really left, so they're not digging it up. Nice find NV85.

hell yea, thats what i want, but i want the original dash and stuff, i dont want a skodia in a volkswagen, but whatever, the Mk1 Mk2 Mk3 Mk4 Mk5 is still, a golf, and this is not quite a golf, but if i could get an original Mk1 golf now, god would i be happy because of those crazy original interiors

I like the red around the grille, but I'm not too fond of the looks though, looks a little too square for me. You can get some other cars which are brand new and are decently priced for around the same price as this model I think. The new gadgets on it do sound nice though.

It seems a bit cheap for a classic. I personally prefer the original.

This is very, very cool. The interior is swank, and it's obviously going to be a hoot to drive like the original, BUT...

The MK1-2 GTI is such an easy car to work on that there really isn't a point in getting a "new" one. Especially because you can find 'em with not many miles (100Kish) for around 600 bucks. The originals have neat looking interiors, are mechanically tough as nails, are so light that they can be more or less picked up and moved by four guys, and are just so, I dunno, "charming" for the same reasons a lot of newer cars aren't as great as the originals. So simple and cleanly styled...so UN-modern VW.

Seriously, as many of you know, the MK2 is one of the first project/first cars I recommend to people, and as much as this interests me, nothing touches working on your own beater and then making it sweeter (yeaaaaaaah, you like them rhymes!).

i think a modernised MK1 is just what we need. there are millions of people who love the retro styling but cant get hold of one in decent condition, and the stone age technology puts people off, this could be BIG UP success. im sure i heard somewhere VW were still selling the original beetle in africa up until 2 or 3 years ago.

The last Beetle was produced in 2003 in Mexico...but if you wan a classic VW model you can still get the original VW Kombi, it's still on production in Brazil, now powered by a 1.4 water cooled engine instead of the original air cooled boxer.

Im from South Africa...and trust me: YOU DONT WANT ONE OF THESE!!! Its a piece of junk! Volkswagen in South Africa are trying to squeeze every last bit of money out of the Citi Golf! The brakes on this car are shocking and there are absolutely no safety features whatsoever.... Its time that VW realise that the game has moved on now and cars like the Citroen C1 and Toyota Yaris and Ford Fiesta are way better.

The only advantage that this car has is its light chassis, its quite quick on a straight line. And the CitiGolf R was meant to be released by February this year.... And its still not here :D

hmm, I don't like it... i just don't like the exterior, looks quite ugly in my opinion, the red lining around the grill is just a bit over the top for me....

however...

the interior is very nice, i think it was a bit weird to have an outdated exterior go with a modern interior... looks like it only counts whats on the inside... lol. :D nice steering wheel by the way, very stylish and modern..

To bad its only in Africa and would never be allowed into the US because it has no airbags or ABS, and I'm sure a lot of other things.

I'd rather get original and rebuild it myself. It'd be a lot more fun.

these new "GTi's" from VW are terrible...

they are just for those rich kids whose daddys buy them anything and everything they want...

trust me... these things are renowned for being very unsafe... the shells are flimsy pieces of crap, and now you put that kinda engine in it... recipe for disaster...

there are already huge numbers of ppl dying on South African roads... we dont need a fast, unsafe care...

Thats freakin awesome man. I wish I could find one like that that seems to be all together. It looks good for sitting in a field for four years. What are his plans for it?

I'd swap in a 1.8T or VR6 motor, unless it has a 16v motor.

Yeah, it was in great condition considering. No rust at all, just a bunch of mold, the interior was in pretty bad shape, needs to be totally redone.

He wants to convert it all back to the way it would have been brand new. I tried to talk him into a different engine but he won't have it.
