Volkswagen Golf R36
Here are the first shots of what’s to become Volkswagen’s ultimate canon ball: the Golf R36!
14th March 2007

Just before being replaced by the new Mk. VI model (http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/spyshots/207438/volkswagen_golf_r36.html#), VW will top the current range with this über-Golf at the Frankfurt Show in September this year. It’s going to be powered by the Passat R36’s 3.0-litre V6 delivering 300 bhp. Exterior will be yet more aggressive than that of the R32 with huge air-intakes at front and a diffuser and mid-mounted pair of thick exhaust pipes at the rear. A Haldex-built all-wheel-drive will be standard.

should give the Impreza STi, Lancer EVO MR and the upcoming Focus RS a run for their money. looks great...
shame though, it'll be damn heavy for a car of its size. the R32 already weighs over 1650kg...

i too think it'll be a bit overweight ,, too much luxury focused ,, but the 3.6L should be good enough for sub 6 second 0-60 times !

The 3.6 L V6 will be more than enough to make this car shift. The point is that it will be comfortable and quick. I would buy it over a bog standard Evo or Subaru. A Litchfield Subaru is £40,000 approx., and a Evo 9 FQ-360 is £35,500. I don't know how much the R36 will cost but it will be the ultimate Golf, and I am sure there will be a market for it.

it's not, it's a naturally-aspirated 3.6-litre V6...

the thing im most phched about its that its awd, instea dof fwd, so itll be able to through down the power without any problems. sub 6 seconds some one said? I say at least sub 5

^ I think you may well be right about that Car_buff. The Passat R36 has a 0-60 mph time of 5.6, and that is conservative in my opinion, so the R36 Golf should do at least sub 5 seconds 0-60 mph time.

yeah, well im basing my numbers off the vw golf r32
Power bhp (kW) at RPM: 250(184) / 6300
Torque lb-ft (Nm) at RPM: 236(320) / 2500
Acceleration 0-60 mph s: 6.4
50 more hp, presumably as much torque and rather than a 4wd system this one has awd. 50 hp should make up for 4 tenths of a second, and the new awd maybe a few more. plus i leave room for possible new gear arrangements

man this car is going to be extremely beast.
I was already in love with the GTI and i thought it had enough power.
Then came the R32 with 184kW and I was gobsmacked.
Then this....R36!
Man I want this car. The front bumper looks really agressive. The only thing I dont like is that they changed the grille. i liked the grille on the GTI (red line) and the R32 (chrome).

Now that is one of the hottest VWs I've ever seen! I mean the front bumper just looks so cool, so does the 2 nostril-like lines under the front grille! Is there any pics of the rear of this car? I wanna see the large mid-mounted exhausts.:D

Sweet I had heard about this car a while back but when the R36 Passat came out I thought people were mistaken, I drove an R32 a while back and loved it, this should be even better.
I don't see 0-60 in less than 5 secs though, it only has 50bhp over the R32 which does it in 6.2 (with DSG, 6.4-6.5 for manual)
the thing im most phched about its that its awd, instea dof fwd, so itll be able to through down the power without any problems. sub 6 seconds some one said? I say at least sub 5
The R32 is AWD at the minute
Edit: I've been looking at some figures, for an audi S3 which is apparently 139 kg lighter than an R32, MTM tuned one to 330bhp and it did 0-60 in 5.1 seconds
B+B tuned one even further to 363bhp and it only just cracked the 5 second barrier. Remenber this is a lighter car and with 60 bhp more, there's no way an R36 Golf will go under 5 seconds

very good looking, its gonna get a mouthful of blood later on, on that grill...that bodykit looks very good, makes it look very agressive, and huge, but wow, thats going to be a beast! but i dont like that two little long Evo grills...but sure it does look great

the r32 has some form of 4wd. there is a differnce between awd and 4wd, awd will acclerate faster than a 4wd system. it should anyways

The R32 runs a Haldex system at the minute that lets the it run with 100 percent of the power on the front wheels until slip happens. When it does, the Haldex setup can send up to 50 percent to the rear wheels.
A true AWD system will accelerate marginally faster but I think the difference will be very small.
Is the R36 system not the same as the R32 ?, all it says in the article is that it will have a haldex awd system, But VW calls it's 4 Motion AWD even though it isn't totally correct

from rs sports cars it says the vw r32 has a "4MOTION four-wheel drive"
however that works, im not sure, but its not a true awd.
if it works like you said, fwd most of the time and when slippage occurs it will go to the rear, then I think the awd should really make a differnce., just because the power will be going to the ground at all time. if it if a small differnce, we ARE only talking about tenths of a second. thats a very small measurement of time, but when those seconds are getting closer and closer to 0 even just 1 thenth of a second makes a big differnce

Wahhooo, look at those air vents! I reckon this is gonna give the Evos, STi's, the RS's and possibly the earlier M3 a run for their money. No doubt it will make an awesome sound, jusy hope it's really enthralling to drive aswell. Go Golf!

never. never ever. the R32 weighs 1650 kg, so this R36 with a bigger engine and more parts will weigh a stupid amount for its size...

why would AWD make acceleration faster than in 4WD? :-k

the four wheel drive system the r32 runs on apparenlty is only based on if the front end starts to slip then the rear kicks in. sounds great and all, but starting out from the begining with all wheels spinning is MUCH better than just the front wheels. it also has more power. true it parenlty has more weight, but thats not because the awd system. an awd system should be lighter than a 4wd

most of the sources i've seen says the R32 does sub six's to 60 already. most magazines and online sources i've seen say 5.8, anything in the 6's is being pretty modest.
but, that said, and as me being a huge VW fan, there's no way this is going to break 5's to 60. i can see low 5's though, possibly 5.2.
but, for a hatchback, that's damn fast. only thing is, i can see the price of this car being easily 40 grand. maybe 35 if VW is nice, which, when it comes to sticker prices, they usually aren't.

yer, the RWD, and lightness of that car, should be really great, but i think BMW may have to tweak the suspension and crap, cos' its so small, its gonna have abit of oversteer.. i think:-k

This is the only reason it wont challenge STI, EVo and Rs: because of weight
As you all know the new R32 wasnt as good as the previous model it was overweight and had too much understeer for an enthusiast driver (I know STI has understeer problem but 1-it can be minimized easily and 2-a really serious driver will buy spec-c anyway)
And the new R36 will have an even heavier engine. However I agree for daily driving and once a week action-driving it would be very good stylish+german engineering+probably good price.

I love Volkswagens. They're tiny, compact, and for its relatevely noticable small size its so powerful; hence making it into NFS:MW. Anyways, that car looks sick as, even though its not a huge change from its predessecor.
But overall = good looks. more pics would have been better. ;)

I agree this will be a great car, although i'm concerned that it may have the traditional VW handling. But if the latest Golf GTI is anything to go by, it shoud be superb. It looks fantastic though, even this spy photo. I love that large grill and the blistered wheel arches. I wonder if it will only be avalable with the DSG transmission or if it will have the option of the manual.
