Can someone please tell me why BMW do not have a big diesel. Mercedes have that 420 CDI, Audi have the V8 and V12, even VW have that V10. Why don't BMW?

either bmw doesnt think there is a market for a huge diesel or they have yet to have one...i think bmw is more concentrated on the 3 and 5 series trying to get good engines that has a blend of bmw quality, performance and mpg,,,besides a diesel v12 or v10 will gobble the fuel nearly as fast as the petrol version so there is very little point!

^^cant argue with that ,, i think the most proper application for a deisel is a 6 cylinder ,,

True. But I would like to see what BMW can do.

anything is possible , even a V12 deisel just like Audi ,, or most probably a V8 deisel,, but i think it not in their market to produce as it might cost alot ,,

Good point. I would hate for BMW to end up spending a lot.

^^ bah, their cars are overpriced spending a little extra money should be nothing to them

Cos people still buy them I might add. If the 1 Series was over 30 thousand pounds for the base 116i, people would still buy it.

I think theres a bigger diesel market in the UK than the US...so for me that explains why they dont have big ones selling in the US but I dont know why they dont elswhere...

I remember once seeing a V10 TDi Toureg. I think you are right.

would be intresting to see a v10 or 12 diesel but they would be rendered utterly USELESS as anyone who buy,s a v12 x5 will certainly not be offroading and in all seriousness why do you need a gargantuan engine.just put a nice v or inline six in and it will be perfect especially a diesel version!

whats the point of these big diesels because the main point is the fuel cost but its going to be expensive running big diesels so theres no point?

Come to think of it, a big diesel is quite useless. Which means that this thread is now useless.

What's the point? Diesels are designed for fuel economy, not speed. If you want a fast car, then a petrol is better. If you make a diesel too big, you lose the fuel economy, and then it no longer has any advantage over a petrol engine. I can't see the point in any diesel bigger than around 4 litres.

if you ask me the 272bhp twin-turbo 3.0-litre diesel is powerful enough. it's just as powerful as the new joint-made (between Jaguar and Land Rover) 3.6-litre twin turbodiesel. not as torquey though...

Good point. Could a mod please close this.

thats the whole point of a deisel. and two turbos on a 3 liter engine only making 272 hp? jesus, thats kind of sad.

close this? why? bmw really should make a large deisel, their like the only people that dont

It just seems pointless now.

lol, for a diesel, 272bhp from a 3.0-litre is very impressive. diesel creates a lot less power but a lot more torque than petrol. why, i'm not sure, but i know it does. btw, BMW's 3.0-litre twin turbo petrol creates 306bhp. that's a petrol with twin turbos... not much more than the diesel, never mind the fact the diesel has tons more torque...

deisels produce more torque due to a larger stroke than most petrols and a more powerful combustion

forgive me if im wrong, but doesnt the bmw 330 (or 335 or something) have a three liter petrol that produces 300 hp and 300 ft pounds torque?

should post how much torque the engine your talking about makes, cause that could make sense, other wise 3 liters is a pretty decent size for an engine. should be able to get some decent power from it as well. 272 just inst impressive with two turbos even if its a deisel

maybe so but the whole point of a diesel is to have good mpg and somehow bmw made a car that has good mpg and pretty impresive power even if it is "only" 272bhp from an inline-6..all in all bmw done a nice job!

big diesel engines are a waste of time... turbocharge a small capacity diesel...

otherwise, leave the big capacity engines for the petrolheads...
