M3 is my choice! The King will reign forever! Kicks the S4 and the CLK55's arse by a mile! No brainer for me. I'm suprised it's not leading already.

CLK55 AMG, but that's only because I saw a black one the other day and it was moving and classier than an M3, it's more relaxed, and right now, I'm a little tired, so that's my choice...

S4, amazing styling

M3 puts out better specs i'm sure, but i'd have to go with the S4. i like the styling more and it's a lot more rare around here. i see an S4 as often as a 360 modena, and an M3 as often as a civic lx.

That's the same here. You see a lot more M3's then S4's. Even the old S4's are rare, and they aren't that expensive anymore

S4....Overall a better car IMO, more practical, more rare here(cars seen , like 15-20 M3s and only 2 S4v8s), 4wd (I personally hate 4wd only for launches because i like seeing the rubber in smoke) but today i fully understood how good a 4wd really is, driving very hard my 4Motion passat in wet. And yeah S4 is better on track even in dry conditions (see Top Gear).

I read test in Auto Motor und Sport (German car magazine) and M3 was faster than S4 on dry and wet track. So you just can't tell that S4 is better on track, much depends on what track is that and whois driving (i'm not saying Stig is bad driver but maybe someone else would drive faster M3 then S4).

I gives my vote to M3 without a doubt.

Jacol you're wright when u say it depends on the track and the driver because i can't quite generalize a comparo after Stig drove both cars, you may be also right about the dry, i was very impressed to see the S4 perform better than the M3 in dry BUT in wet conditions i will never bealive the M3 would win over the S4. And that's because of the quattro system. In wet a rwd car even an M3 is very twichy and hard to control with the dsc off while with it on whell you might aswell toe the car to the finish line  In the end as i said earlier i would still choose the S4 for the same reasons.
When i read your post i was thinking about winter....aaah M3---> winter :x bad combination.
A guy drove best cars and said quote:
I wonder how many of you guys have actually driven both the M3 and the S4? Well I have tested both, and I can tell you the S4 is simply a better car. I wanted to buy an M3. I have always wanted an M3. But when I tested them both, I could not believe how much better the S4 is. Yes, in a straight line in test conditions, the M3 might just be 0.1s faster on the 0-60 dash. But this all done in first gear! Try real world driving: put your foot down in third at say 1,500. In the M3, nothing happens! Its like driving a 320 Coupe. Do the same in the S4 and it pins you to the seat. Its just unbelievable. And around corners? The M3 is like real twitchy. You constantly think you'll be in the ditch at any moment. The S4 is just on rails. The M3 is just so much more "raw". I can see why some hardcore track-day racing fans might prefer it because you do get more "feel" in the M3. But for normal people who want a superbly built, fast, safe, fun car - the S4 is just miles better.

sorry i ment both cars not best cars
I think that the bmw M3 are for hose who want to slide around corners like the maniacs that they are. the S4 on the other hand are for those who wish to hurtle past things at ease. and for the M3 fans out there, the S4 has about an extra 30lbs/ft of torque. this means that at mid engine range (where most work will be done), the S4 will be pulling easily while the M3 will be working hard. if you like, the S4 is almost an "anti M3". it does everything the M3 can do except it is glued to the road.

Well you don't have to belive me but M3 was faster. In that test for track was used a 1,5km long special test road with two fast turns, two slow turns and two turns that together makes S letter. The times were M3 on dry 47,32s on wet 53,94s and S4 on dry 48,01s on wet 56,91s. In conclusion of the test they have said that main reason why S4 was slower is higher weight (83kg more than M3) and major understeer. About winter I agree with you S4 would be much much better.

Search for M3 and S4 and you'll see that the S4 is faster on this lap:(see the left of the pic)

All three are very good cars.Chucking a V8 into a mid sized car and giving it 4WD will give me the nod towards the S4.
Cant wait for the new RS4 to come out  (thats if it comes out).

It's the one I chose after driving yesteryear's models. ('95 M3 coupe vs. '97 S4) M3 - feels more nimble, higher rev's...that damn exhaust note is ferocious. S4 - Considerable understeer, feels heavy around corners, suspension not as quick to react...reallllllly need to maintain that 2.7 bi-turbo engine. The tactile feeling in the M3 to me just feels superior to the S4, Pedal travel, Steering wheel feedback, manual shift mechanism, driving position, the way the car bonds to your body and mind; especially after upgrades, the M3 just is a SOLID performer with a heritage steeped in racing and of an engineering pedigree that makes me grin ear to ear...that DAMN engine note...LOVE IT.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Audi. In fact, I'm currently looking for a '98ish a6 avant Q to trailer my ghia to vw/audi shows, go camping in the mountains, etc. Hell, it's probably more comfortable over roadtrips than either the M3 or S4, lot'o'room too. Mercedes would likely be a plush ride over long distances as well.

But I want a sports'-luxury car...not a luxury-sports' car. Make mine M3. And mod it as much as you WANT!!

Ok. can i change my vote? I drove a 320ci and it was superb. I never drove a bmw before, in fact excluding the rx-8 never drove a rwd car before. It is superb. And yeah **** the winter, i'll drive my moms opel corsa if the winter is so harsh or by bus
ok kidding no bus...

M3, but a CSL version would be even better! Then the S4 and then the CLK55, would a C55 be a better choice?

Nope, because the CLK55 is a coupe and the C55 is a sedan. The CLK also looks alot better IMO.
