Sporty new recruit

Lotus Cars Australia has donated a special new recruit to the NSW Police Bankstown Local Area Command with the arrival of a high performance Lotus Exige. The lightweight, high performance Lotus Exige sports car will be used by Bankstown Local Area Command for a number of community policing roles over the next six months, including most importantly, helping to build better relations between police and local performance car enthusiasts and youth. As well as helping with critical community relationship issues the Lotus Exige will assist Bankstown Highway Patrol in raising its profile during work at Random Breath Testing, Radar and Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) sites. The Lotus also boasts significantly better fuel economy than conventional V8 and turbocharged six cylinder Highway Patrol cars and will bring a new green hue to the command's vehicle fleet. Being almost half the weight and with an engine that is less than a third the size of traditional Highway Patrol sedans the Exige is significantly kinder on the environment consuming on average around five litres less fuel per 100km while still being able to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h up to 30 percent faster than the big V8s.

The Lotus' supercharged 1.8 litre four cylinder engine and lightweight extruded and bonded aluminium tub, encased in a lightweight composite body also ensure the Exige has a better power to weight ratio than the big V8s meaning it requires less energy to achieve better performance. Superintendent Dave Darcy accepted the keys to the Lotus Exige from Lotus Cars Australia's national sales and marketing manager Jon Stretton and thanked the company for its contribution to policing in the Bankstown area.

"The Lotus Exige will help break down barriers between our officers and youth in the area, it gives them a discussion point and a way of breaking the ice," said Superintendent Darcy. "We have a large proportion of car enthusiasts in the area and it is a challenge to influence them to drive safely. Whilst its easy to give this group tickets to slow them down we would prefer to influence young drivers to take care on the roads. I see that the use of the new Lotus Exige police vehicle will break down barriers allowing us to get our safety messages through. There is no doubt that the Lotus will be highly visible and generate public interest, it will assist us operationally by promoting our road safety crime prevention messages to a targeted group of offenders. Giving youth the chance to realise that police are real people and have a job to do is an important part of our work, and if the Lotus can help us achieve that then it will be an asset during its time with us," he added. Bankstown Local Area Command will use the Lotus for the next six months under long term loan from the manufacturer. According to Jon Stretton from Lotus Cars Australia the precedent for this co-operation with the police was set in the UK where the company forged a similar relationship with the Norfolk Constabulary lending the force a Lotus Elise to achieve similar goals. "Following the success of the co-operation with Norfolk Police we saw the chance to link up with NSW Police to help it achieve similar goals," said Jon Stretton. "The Norfolk Police had similar challenges to Bankstown Local Area Command with performance car enthusiasts and in establishing stronger relations to help prevent unacceptable behaviour," he said. "The Lotus gave the Norfolk Police credibility with the performance car enthusiasts and I expect the Lotus Exige will do the same for Bankstown officers," he added. "We are also very conscious of environmental issues and keen to demonstrate ways of using less fuel with more economical performance cars. Just because the police have always used conventional cars with large engines doesn't mean they can't look at alternatives that can reduce fuel consumption and be kinder on the environment," Jon Stretton added. The police Lotus Exige features full NSW Police livery and is equipped with a removable emergency light system that can be used when it is at particular operations such as random breath test and radar sites throughout the Bankstown Local Area Command

Oh this is sweet. No more n00bs in their big V8's are gonna outrun the cops anymore.:p

But it would look better in white. That yellow doesn't look good with all those chequered and police decals.

^^ yea white would look better. but i prefer black. still HOLY CRAP that car is ownage. Hope no one "tries" to out run one of those exige's. I don't think alot of cars can do that. is it the exige S or just the normal exige???

Robbie
Feb 19, 2007, 3:31 AM
thats the exige

well i love it, thogh white, yea suits it more, but then those white blocks would be gone, but whatever, they would have been there for decals and undercover police comes lol, well it looks great, i dont think many cars could run away from that little beast

Lol, it looks tiny in the second picture. And yeah, the yellow colour really ruins it. it should've been white like those hot Holdens in the background.
I wonder how that light bar will affect the air flow to the rear wing. it's one of those small new LED bars, but it would still cause some disturbance at this point.

Its gonna be a big help for the Aussies in car chases but it would look better in white

Plubicity stunt.

Usless as a police car.

Its too small you couldent force people off the road, worse yet they could spin you out just by touching you, uncomfrotable for long operating hours, almost no storage for gear, and not that great on the highway in terms of accleration.

I thought it was an uncomfrotable car to drive and Im pretty much in my prime physically.

cant imagine a middle aged man wanting to spend more than a track day in one.

Probably the worst police car ever.

Theres a reason they use big cars with battering rams, big storage and V8's in America. Because you cant get away from them, and you cant beat them in a pushing match.

Plus they are comfrotable for long shifts, and have ample room for gear.

They keep going on and on about weight, but you want something heavy, they use big ass suburbans down here for drug running enforcment because if someone fights you, your still in a suburban.

Plus they can keep pace with most cars on the highway. (big V8's)

Fuel consumption means nothing to the police force compared to price of car.

They will not be operating the fleet patrol cars long enough to ever gain back the extra 5k they spend on each car, and its a lot more than that for exinges.

Not to mention maitinence, that would be a disaster.

Yep, worst choice for a police car ever, even a 41 Ford would fit the bill better.

You people are the worst readers ever.

Bravodor, there is MORE work at the police then just ramming other cars of the road in chases... They WONT use it in car chases. This is where it will be used:
(...)the Lotus Exige will assist Bankstown Highway Patrol in raising its profile during work at Random Breath Testing, Radar and Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) sites.(...)

Robbie, it is the Exige S. It has a supercharged engine. Does that ring a bell?

wah, it says Lotus Exige, not the Lotus Exige S, weird...

No I read the bullshit "practicallity" excuse they came up with to justify it.

You dont need a highly expensive go cart with gumball tires to do brethalizer tests.

Your the worst interpreter ever if you think this was ment to be in the "SLIGHTEST" bit practical.
I on the other hand am quite literate, and I read the whole post.

Unlike someone :P, but I will help you out dont worry

THE COMMISSIONER EVEN SAYS IT IS A PLUBLICTY STUNT:

"We have a large proportion of car enthusiasts in the area and it is a challenge to influence them to drive safely. Whilst its easy to give this group tickets to slow them down we would prefer to influence young drivers to take care on the roads. Its a show, 100%, nothing else, dont even try to justify it, its obvious.

Im sure you know this.
Im just misinterpreting you.

Its just a plublicty stunt, and they dont really make an attempt to hide that fact.

But its still a pure stunt.

And of course their is more work in the police units.

But the exinge doesnt fit any of them, not one.

My Grandfather is a cop, was for decades, I know a little something about police work and I have driven an elise (neighbors, its orange) which is very similar to the exinge.

I can garentee you that it has no place in the police force and never will.

Its like giving someone a golden spoon and asking them to breakup 2 miles of concrete, it just doesnt make any sense.

I never said that it wasn't a publicity stunt. Offcourse it is, same goes for the Gallardo in Italy, the Spyker and the old Rolls here in the Netherlands. And there are probably alot more.
Besides that, the Exige is never a practical car in my opinion
My point was that the biggest part of your first post, you are saying how it's useless as a chase car. But they never said that they will use it as a chase car.
Then again, I do agree you never need an Exige as police car.

Feb 19, 2007, 9:27 AM
How do you arrest people. Shove them in the engine bay?

But hey, its a Exige. How cool is that. I don't think it can outrun the big V8 muscle cars on the straights but on the corners... it should be fast. I also wonder what happens when a Big speeding Ford Falcon or something comes and makes impact with it.

I say this car is quite useless for everyday police work. You can let it do everyday police work but i dont think it will work. I think it is only good in city streets when someone is getting robbed in rushhour.

Feb 19, 2007, 9:31 AM
Wow. How cool is this? An Exige S on the road, haha, I wouldn't really like to see that in my rear view mirror. Although, it will be a little uncomfortable on long journies, you can see the point in this one. What about one of these in black?

After you and your cop partner chase down the badguy, read 'em their rights and cuff them, they're supposed to sit where...I'm just messin' with ya :)

Car_buff
Feb 19, 2007, 10:58 AM
much as I love the lotus, it just doesnt make a good police car.

if you make an arrest the freaking guy has to sit right next to you

and the ride is so bad im sure that they criminal or whatever can sue for police brutality.

its too light, anything on the road could knock it off. and so long as the car enthusaists in the area arent morons there gonna know that that lotus isnt gonna do anything, so if anything it will only promote further lawlessness

Robbie, it is the Exige S. It has a supercharged engine. Does that ring a bell?

no, its a stock exige, the exige s has vents and wings the same colour as the car, the exige always has black vents and wings

@Bravador, true its a hard car to get into for a middle aged man, but inside is relaxing, and actually more spacious than you'd of thought. I was in one and you could fall alseep in it.

If you ask me, i think they should of got an exige 265e, 1, for a bit more fun speed, 2, they could claim they were also helping the environment, when the really just want the speed for a bit of fun

Thats scary - I was talking with some mates at work about Hot Fuzz and how the police have Astra Diesels and should have Lotuses. Cool, though. And Bravador, publicity is what they want to encourage younger drives to drive safely - you are angry it'll help save lives? Sort out your argument...

"We're trying to build ties with the local car enthusiast youth, and this is a breaking the ice point."

Biggest. BS. lie. to get. a. Lotus Police Car. EVER.

Awesome though.

It's for rapid response and it probably won't be used like other cop cars.

Everyone, they're not going to transport suspects in this car obviously.

They'll just call for a squad car, just like they would any other car without a cage.

My sentiments exactly. Why can't we even have Jags, if they need 4 seaters?

The car looks nice and I am sure the cops will "bond" with the youth.:D

Yet I would take this police car any day.

Or if you want practicality the Aussies should get this.

yay, finally a new car thats not a V8, this is going to be cool and exciting since i live near the bankstown area in NSW they're gonna patrol, i just wish it was white so it could blend in with the other police cars, but still, it looks pretty good in yellow, it would definitely catch some ass.

I didnt think it was that comfrotable when I drove it.

But I drove my neighbor's elise, although Im fairly sure they are the same.

Ive fallen asleep in much worse places so that doesnt really qualify as comfort.

Its really quite cramped.

Bravador, publicity is what they want to encourage younger drives to drive safely - you are angry it'll help save lives? Sort out your argument...

I appreciate it if you read my posts first.

My argument doesnt need to be sorted out, someone was trying to convince me this car had a practical purpose besides being a show.

Im not angry per-say, I just think it is a waste of police funds, they are under-funded as it is.

And realistically, how is showing kids a race car going to make them want to drive safely ?

Its a terrible campagin, as are all the "supercar" police cars.
Sure there fun to think about but terrible in concept.
