recently, i decided to buy a European car, basically,
my choices are Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz, and Porsche.
here's a list of cars i can choose from,
1.Audi S4
2.Audi A6
3.BMW 530i
4.BMW M3
5. MB CLK320
6. Porsche Cayenne
7.BMW X5
i tested drived the CLK320, it's not that fast, but pretty smooth.
i'm having a reallie hard to decide which one to buy, so please give
opinions on which one should i buy.
by the way, i'm only a highschool student.

First I think we'll all need some more info, like, what do you need it do, basic transportation, fun, any luggage space needed, mileage, and insurance, and so on and so forth...
Based on that list, I'd safe you're safest by getting the Audi A6, it's got good luggage space, All Wheel Drive for all the weather problems you'll face, and reasonably good mileage. And it's got room for at least 5 people, but like I said before, we'll all need to know what the car is needed for.
However, if sporty is more your style, then the S4 or M3 are choice picks. They're a little more stiff riding to say the least, but they can definitely raise your pulse quiiiiite a bit.
The 530i is a good car all around but the Audi A6 has the added safety of All Wheel Drive...
Okay, I just realized you said you're a High School Student, mind if I give someone with more financial power than I had when I was in high school (only two years ago)...
Get, a Corvette...it's usable, faster than everything on that list by alot, and it's mid pack in price...It get's a reasonably OKAY gas mileage, but the insurance rates will murder you...but it can be an option, plus Chevrolet designed the new Corvette for European style, and they succeeded in my humble opinion.
You're young, enjoy a toy while you still can. 8)

A CORVETTE!!!!!! ARE YOU NUTS?!?!?! you'd get in soooo much trouble with that. Cops would be looking for you. I say, get a GTO. It's big, fast and very well built. A CTS would be nice, maybe a 300C or something along those lines. Don't go for euro cars. Also, a G35 coupe is a good choice. A very good choice. Remeber, go for a sleeper. Your insurance won't be high and cops won't notice you.

Ghalos, first, uh..., i go for Luxury and Sporty, i don't reallie need a HUGE room, but a
sufficient room is good.
and since i'm only in highschool, my mother's paying for my car,
and she only likes Euro cars, so i dont' think Corvette's possible
i know there are some reallie nice Jap cars out there right now,
such as G35, 350Z, STI, etc, but as i said, she wants me to drive a
euro car.
one problem of Euro is they cost so much to maintain it, i'm not even
sure if i can maintain that car through out my college.
i read the Comsumer Report Mag. the other day, and i read so articles online
about each car, M3 and S4 has the worst comments, they cost 10K more to
maintain it for 5 years. i think i will go test drive M3 and Cayenne this Sat.
by the way, i live in TX, so it's really hot here, and i dont' reallie need any
thing for winter for the car.
i personally like M3 the best, i guess it's bcuz of peer pressure
i want to buy a car "for show"
yeah, u know what i meant?
give more suggestions if you can, thanks a lot!!

An M3 for a first car? (I'm presuming) E36 or E46? Anyway, I wouldn't wanna get that car, it's just too, high powered. Seriously, you're in high school and you a want a fully-feldged M3 in your hands?
I'd personally take a BMW X5. It's big, fuel economy's a bummer but there is lotsa room and you can make it into a 'shaggin wagon'! :P

man... all those cars are in like 50k range.. if you're mom wants you to have a european car.. i'm assuming she wants prestige and elegance, which i would personally think; a lexus GS430 would have.. you could look for a certified pre-owned one and be easily able to afford it over other cars.. and with a toyota reputation; you wouldn't have to worry about maintenence.. should be kinda sporty enough too.. but without doubt, very luxurious.. another would definetely be a G35 coupe.. now this might not have as much prestige as a lexus or a european car; but i'd say those 2 are your best bet if you're really concerned about maintenence
otherwise i'd go straight for an M3!!! :D pretty decent room.. (but fuel economy... :x ) even in the back seat, or an S4 (also get killed by fuel...)
but if you need a good overall european car that wouldn't do way to bad on fuel econ and all; i'd go with what ghalos said, and take the A6.. probably the 2.7T

Ok so maybe a Corvette was a bad idea, but hey, I was feeling saucy... 8)
Ok, out of the ones you mentioned I'm gonna say the M3 is stylish as hell, the S4 and A6 look alot alike in my opinion. Also, if you are going more for style and prestige, a pre-owned Mercedes Benz SLK or CLK are good choices. And finally, if Japanese style is what you want, after all, it is your car, the Lexus line-up including the IS300 are very good choices, plus they're very reliable. My uncle has had an ES300 for three years and I gotta say...it's a verrrry smooth car.

Jul 08, 2004, 3:57 PM
Wait, you want style, and to look awesome...
No offense, but a Mercedes and Lexus along with an Audi aren't squat compared to a Porsche...The Cayenne, yeah, it's arguably the best SUV out there today, no question. But, if you want to look cool, have you thought about a first model year Porsche Boxtser?? They get good mileage because they have a flat-6, they're quite comfy, it's a convertible, and it's got enough luggage room for most of your stuff. And, this is courtesy of a magazine called Sports Car International, a very reputable source, they're Boxster Buyers Guide...
A 2.5 liter vesrsion from 1997 with low mileage, shouldn't go for more than $27,000 and a 1999 2.5 liter version, low mileage, shouldn't go for more than 43,000...
Another stylish option is a new BMW Z4, that's a very fine line style car, either you love it or you hate it, but here in the Northeast, at least my area of it, SUV's are universally condemned for being gas munching road cloggers
But at least you can get your "play" on...you sly devil you!!!

guys, thanks a lot for the replies, i reallie appreicated.
i like all the cars y'all mentioned, but since it's not my $$ :)
i have to listen to what my mom likes, and i could only
give her suggestions.
she won't give me a Z4 or Boxster, or anything like that,
anycar she thinks looks sporty she won't get it for me,
cuz i'm kinda of a crazy driver, she concerned about my safty a lot.
i decided that it would be best for me to test drive the Cayenne,
it's a PORSCHE, awesome car, SUV (big room), fast for a SUV,
and good specs over all, plus, i have a good chance of convince my
mom to get it, cuz she drives a Lexus, she always wants a big car
for my family.
i never told her about M3 or S4's maintaince, cuz if i do, i'm sure
i won't even have a chance of getting it.
Benz's CLK320's pretty smooth, kinda slow though
i test drove it the other day, options are expensive, just like
the Cayenne, Xennon light option cost $1,240, so expensive.
man, i dont' know which car to go for.
y'all can talk about anything, i'll answer questions if you post them.

I'm with jim, out of them i would take the M3, but it is a performance car, so for a young driver not necessarily the best option, and Cayenne, yeah its a beast, but here in UK no kid would 1) be able to get the insurance 2) afford spare parts and 3) ever want to be seen in one! And its so big, but I guess that doesnt matter in the US!
On the sensible choice, if we could ever have that much money for my first car, I think I would take the Audi A6 or BMW 5-series, simply because they are quick in their own way, but also safer cars and tend to have good road holding!
good luck in choosing!

well, it's not my first car, i been driving for almost 2 yrs already.
this is gonna be my 2nd car, i'm tired of my first slow car (Toyota Camry)
so i want to get a new one.
i doubt my mom will buy me the M3, if she does, i would be glad,
but if she doesn't, i think i should go for Cayenne, simpliy bcuz
it's the best of SUV, and i like SUVs too.
anyone can tell me something about Cayenne?
like maintaince? fuel efficiency? quality? etc.

WHOOO!!! TWIN TURBO DIESEL!!! but i don't like diesel that much IMO :P...
so.. if you want an SUV.. well i wouldn't suggest a cayenne cause it doesn't get much out of it's fuel.. i'd suggest either a BMW X3 3.0.. or if you you want more power.. infiniti FX45/35... now this is a jap car.. but very classy, elegant, and yes.. sporty IMO.. and it gets about same fuel econ as the cayenne (V8 ) if you can afford it's hefty fuel bill.... otherwise FX35/ BMW X3 3.0 would be even better..

YEEEAAAHHH!!! S60R!!!... ok.. now to sedans... a few to be reccomended are the lexus GS430 (like i said.. same price range as a lot of the cars you listed) a very luxurious car.. very smooth ride.. and should be pretty sporty too!! and very reliable over the years
audi 2.7t.... now if you can't get a lexus GS.. the A6 would also be a great choice.. also very luxurious and sporty.. but not as much power as the lexus
and last but not least... the S60 R!!! the sportiest of them all.. fastest... and simply the best if your top priority is sportiness... if luxury and sportiness are even.. the audi A6/ GS430 both fair fine..

all those cars are so nice, that's it's so hard for me to decide one
man, Cayenne's fuel's scary
it can take about 26.9 gal of full tank
and 14/18 mpg, that's crazy
it's gonna cost me so much
but i think, i will just try to test drive every car and see how i feel about
each one and most importantly, how my mom feel about each car
it's gonna take me a while
but hopefully i can get one before school starts, that would be P.I.M.P
and ima have my customized License Plate
any website i can get some car parts?

E-Types rock! 8) but you really need a reconditioned car, or get an Eagle version, as well as having a rust-check. Also dont get an original softop, get one that has had a new one put on as the old ones leak!!!
Oh yeah, and get the Mk3 V12 with the Mk1 headlamps, thats my favourite after the Eagle E-Type! (but theres only like 200 of them, made in England, so I dont know if you can get one in the US :?) :P

You guys do know that an older collector car is ridiculously hard to maintain right??
Of course you do, otherwise you wouldn't post at RSC...but I digress...The Jaguar S-Type is a liiiittle more expensive, but if you can talk your mom into letting you get an "R" version...oh man...you could race for girlfriends, and even if you lost (not likely, you'd still look daaaamn good in a Jag.

i'm not into old schools at all
everyday on the road, i see hundreds of BMWs and Benz
that makes me think that Porsche is the one.
i haven't see that many Cayenne around

they know u r pimp
and Jaguar's has reallie bad ratings on Comsumer Report Mag.
i looked at Jaguar S-type, it does look nice, but since
the rating's reallie bad, i don't think i will consider that car anymore

Xenon Head-lamps, i wish i could get the auto-height adjust option

It's already got Xenon's I think and if you go for 20 inch rims you might find the trade-off in ride quality to be unbearable...Also, with larger wheels/tires, make sure it's done properly, have professionals do it, otherwise you get heavy offsets at each wheel and the vehicle's performance in acceleration, turning, and braking are all heavily diminished...Like Firestone says, "It's where rubber meets the road"...or something like that, it is firestone right?!!?? 8)

Are you a Merc salesman? :P Anyhow, both cars seem to have a big divide down the middle, some people swear by BMW's and others by Mercs, and some who remain neutral and probably never own one! However, how I see the difference is the BMW is the more driving experience car, more driving fun in the BMW series, and the Mercs are the more refined comfy cars, and has been said by reviewers that the Mercs lack less "feeling" than BMW's. Obviously this is just speculation as I have never, and probably never will get to drive the high end performance Mercs and BMW's!!!

I work for a BMW / Mercedes dealership, and can honestly say having driven both the M/B's fair better in the long run. M/B makes a better sport coupe and sedan the only problem is that the Bmw's cost less. With the M/B you get what you pay for. If you check out supercars.net bmw's dont even crack into the top 50 0-60 or top speed for the fastest cars.

Come on, the Base Cayenne is slower than your camry, Grand Cherokee Overlands, and even V8 Explorers will kick your ass all day long, and if you get the heavy 20's with spinners the'll even "corner" better.

in england i would take the Cayenne, its so much quicker and sounds nicer, and every mum has an X5 for the schoolmobile, and from an overall factor, I would take the Cayenne, but for different reasons to you, I like it because you can go into a mine or just dirt and literally mess around with the car and have fun. The X5 is dated now, but personally if I could get a 4x4, I would take the new Range Rover Vogue in black with the black sport rims and bullbars, which here falls into the same price range, imagine this with bullbars and black wheels, and you got one hell of a nice car, looks decent in other colours as well though!

There is however only 1 model I like- It is the new BMW X5 4.8iS. A Mazda 3! with the chance of any almost anycar, you are surely not saying a Mazda 3 is better than a BMW M3
i think he means it's much more practical for a first car.. and i'd agree... but enough with that lol :P
so.. actually.. in 0-60... the INFINITI FX45 is 1 second FASTER (HUGE DIFFERENCE) from 0-60 mph than the porsche cayenne S (V8 ) and is just as good handling... but those 20 inch rims don't give for the most comfortable ride in the world.. still its ride isn't that bad :)

Your Mother and I need to have a chat..Money to waste like that could well be spent getting Willie something nice insted of having you break it and waste it
go to VW ask for a blk on blk passet with a diesel engin there something like 1.9 liter and get some 62 miles to the gallon of fuel.. you'll save so much money during school and collage you will be able buy you and me a nice car....

how about a lexus GS430? sport sedan.. you get sort of the best of both worlds.. but it's no M3.. sort of a good last resort if your mom keeps insisting on an LS430.. she can't argue with a GS..

what about Maintaince?
i know that M3's reallie reallie good, i love it too
but once we start talking about Maintanice
BMW's wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy below Lexus
see that's the thing
jap cars' have good reliability, like don't get in problem that often
but Euro car? man, my friend bought a 745Li, he only had it for like 3 month
it has like 10 major problems, that's why i'm concerned about Euro cars

so then.. how is a lexus GS430 or an infiniti FX45? those would be reliable if you're concerned about that.... but the FX might be a little toooo sporty.. ride is a little rough cuz the hard suspension and HUGE rims

yes.. indeed.. S4 really is nice.. but for reliability reasons.. i'd go with something like a volvo S60R.. but if you still want S4.. i'd rather take an M3..

does anyone know why is there a huge difference in price between Europe and US?
should M3 in Europe cost less? but from what i heard,European M3 cost a lot more?
it doesn't make sense to me.

I dont know why, but nearly every car is cheaper in the US than in Europe (Excluding true supercars like Ferrari, Pagani, Lambrghini etc)
And that sucks loads

Here in Greece the M3 coupe costs (base) €80.500. That is approx. $97.000. It is a very expensive car.
Cars are cheaper in America because it is a larger market and the taxes are not so heavy. Most companies also have plants in the US so there are no transportation costs... The European M3s are constructed only in Germany.
(note: the M3 in Germany costs €55.100...)
Gene

a well equipped M3 in U.S cost $55,000
that's more than 40k less than european price
does M3 symbolize as a "super" car in europe?
or like a "rich man's" car?
cuz in here, some of my friends' already have it.
two brothers, each have one, white and red.
and my other friends' too.
