Land Rover Range Stormer
The Range Stormer offers a glimpse of Land Rover’s future design direction. In addition to rounded edges from front to rear and top to bottom, the concept is also squatter and less top-heavy than other Land Rovers.
A production version of a full-size sport utility vehicle that’s based on the Range Stormer will be built, though likely without some of the far-out features of the concept, such as scissor-type doors and a panel underneath each door that flips down to create a step for passenger entry. The interior is sparsely appointed — a characteristic that must change to suit Land Rover’s image of luxurious offroad travel — and the vehicle has only four seats, which could change given the SUV’s full-size status. The production model also will be taller than the Range Stormer, though Land Rover insists it will maintain its sporty personality.
But one unique feature is slated for inclusion on the production version: a control that allows the driver to choose between six “terrain response” settings. This system adjusts the suspension and transmission shift points to suit the vehicle for a variety of on- and offroad environments.
The Range Stormer, Land Rover’s first-ever concept, is built on a new platform and is powered by a V-8 engine. It has full-time four-wheel drive and a six-speed-automatic transmission. Likely competitors for the production model include the BMW X5, Lexus GX 470 and Mercedes-Benz M-Class.
