An old porsche, mind you, i havent got the money for any prosche (technically) and certainly not enough money for a new one.

An old one, but I dont think too old, I think its some where in the 70-80's range.

but honestly I havent a clue, and I cant really tell you anything other than the headlights are hidden when not in use.

nvm, after extensive research, I found the model numbers 924 and 944

so rather thana request for model name or whatever, a comparison between the two, anything you may know about them, and perhaps a general price tag?

Hmm, well, myself, I find the 944 more chunky and overall a better car, however, y'all probably knew I would say that!
I think 944s go for about £3500 ($6,838) approx. It's variable though, depending on the condition and what have you. They are both very well built cars. You definitely get value for money, Dad says the 944 is heaven to drive, easy to change gear, smooth accleration, and I believe they can be quite quick. (Seen one race lol) My Dad's has been used as a daily driver, {since my Grandpa first bought it back in 1986} right up until a couple of years ago when it became his 'weekend car', it also gets in yearly run down to Le Mans, which it is capable of.
Overall, I think it is a good choice as a car.

I can't tell you a lot about the 924, except there is reason my Grandpa choose the 944 lol...
He had a 924, then a blue 944, but it didn't have power steering, so he purchased a second. My Grandpa has had a substanial amount of cars over the years, and it's wonder he even kept one. The only one he did keep was the 944, until it got too low for him to access easily enough. lol

There's always the 968, but they are quite hard to come across... lol

For starters, the 924 was a project with Porsche and VW. It doesn't have a genuine Porsche engine, it's a 4 cylinder VW. The 924 is about as entry level you are going to get besides maybe a 914. But, if you compare the 924 to a 944 there are significant differences. The body of the 944 has better lines, and is now a full on Porsche project. The interior isn't as nice in a 924. So basically it's just a lot of small changes that add up to an all new model line. 944's start with a base 2.5 liter engine having a ballpark figure of 150 HP. Doesn't sound like much, but for a starter car it's perfect. Then they have the S version, (189 HP) Turbo (217 HP) and then the Turbo S with 250 HP. The best car for the money though is the S in my opinion. An S you can buy for under $5000, a turbo in decent shape will be $9000 and up. If you have any more specific questions fire away man. Oh, and the handling of the 944 is just awesome. It's very easy to drive quickly in the twisties, and is very easy to control. Just an absolute blast to drive.

The 944 is probably one of the better Porsche's made if you want a good overall sports car (although technically a 'sports coupe'). Here's a repost of what I posted in another current thread about these cars:

Volkswagen commissioned Porsche to design a sports coupe for them that would work with an existing Audi I4 engine. VW ended up putting the design on hold to concentrate on the Quattro. Porsche needed a car to replace the 914 with so they bought the design and license for the new car from VW. The Audi engine and transmission from the original design were used in the car. When the 944 was designed however, the drive train was completely Porsche. If you ask most Porsche drivers, the 944 is probably the best starter car to get into Porsches with...

Well when you have the money maybe look into it more. Another one to look at might be the 914. It is one of my favorites.

I did mention that up earlier, but he hasn't commented back. I totally agree with you, the 914 has got to be an absolute riot on some good B roads on a sunny Sunday drive. I will buy one someday. The one thing you do have to watch is the rust issues. I see so many on ebay that have "just a little surface rust" and there's holes in it. But if you get one that wasn't kept out in the wet, you should be fine.

It's not THAT small! lol... It's actually a few inches bigger than an X-1/9. They are fun as hell though!

Alright Carbuff, we gave you some great advice, now what are you going to do?? Still thinking you want a 924 or 944. Is the 914 now a thought? I'm always curious when someone on the board gets a new car, I think it's great. So goodluck in advance.;)

yeah., after all the inof my thoughts so far is that, entry level is great, and slighlty better is even greater

BUT

Im gonna try and get my hands on the 944 turbo s. only porsche ill probably ever own, and im sure ill enjoy it, :p

and, definatly going with the stick if its possible to find one

btw, going througha bucnh of used car sites, these cars are just about imposible to find, and some of them sell for as much as 20k. im thinking i may have to put this goal (not dream) off for a little bit. hell, the cars are older than i am, and I still cant afford it, :p

but now the only advice I need is which year to get, and what color should I either try to get it in, or paint it.

so far, i think the 89 (which would be as old as me) with the white color looks alot to my liking

I told you the Turbo S is really hard find, and very expensive. Just go for the Turbo, it's 30 HP less, but you can easily get that with very little modification. Check these guys out.

Guards red is gorgeous, I don't think you can beat white though. I'd go for a 944 1986 and newer. I'm not a fan of the early interiors, that were made up until 84-85 I believe.

ill definatly come back to that site if i can get my hands on one of the 944's, looks pretty good, although rather than a kit or soemthing I might try and freelance some of the stuff and do my own work on it, depends on where i am in the time I get the porsche
