Aussies developed BMW with a bed
http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2006/12/e39-m5-ute-(450-x-338).jpg (http://www.jalopnik.com/cars/custom-cars/man-builds-ute-a-bimmermino-down-under-223510.php)
Why not? In Australia, Ford sells the F6 Tornado, Pursuit and Super Pursuit under the Ford Performance Vehicle (FPV) banner, hauling ass as well as anything else. BMW doesn't offer anything even close, so what is a Bimmer enthusiast to do when he has to stop at The Home Depot for garden supplies? Certainly not put them in the X5!
There is always someone out there who solves problems such as this before they actually become an issue. In this case, a bloke named POWERCHIP from the M5Board has taken a BMW E39 M5 and is converting it into what he calls the M5 UTE. It seems that after talking to Shane from Southern Rod and Custom in New South Wales Australia it looked like his dream car might just come true.
The yearlong transformation of this great sedan into the M5 UTE is truly amazing. Every inch of the vehicle is being properly engineered to drive just like the M5 from which it spawned. First of all I must say they have done a good job, that's not the work of a crazy man with a saw, they seem to thought about it before chopping the bimmer. On the other side I don't see the point on doing this with an E39 M5, probably because I really like the stock car, they could have done the same thing with any E39 5-Series and then upgrade the engine and suspensions if they wanted more performance IMO.
well having this said, what are you thoughts about this conversion?

Holy ***** that is so cool. When I saw the title I bet it was gonna be another car transformation that looks dodgy but this actually looks amazing. But it would have taken a lot of work to make it look that good.

It appears to have been very well done, they clearly planned it quite a bit as well, judging by those sketches. I wonder how much stiffness the chassis has lost and if there is much added weight.
Small time car modifiers (individulals) like this guy and the 1100hp mini guy make the world go round!

If i have an E39 M5 i would never do that to it , but it's just me .
Anyway seriously that's some serious work , i mean it looks sleek , clean , nice job . I guess each one has his own view of his dream car:p

Looks pretty good, honestly though I would rather have a Holden UTE....but thats just me. Its a nice unique concept that has obviously been very well thought out and planned.

Its actually quite cool IMO....though its nothing like the Holden one....

I'd take it over a Holden ute! The FPV utes are another story, but damn, it's cool for being a BMW:p
By the way, what's up with the tail lights on that rendering? They look more like those from the 3 Series Compact than those of the the 5 Series.

This is too far. The Corvette ute was alright, and fresh, but this one just seems to take the cake. BMWs are not suited as utes. They are fast as hell, economical, refined and very good cars, but utes? Not really up my street.
It doesn't look that good, and something that can smash wallabies to pieces and cart a million cans of Fosters around should not be bearing the BMW badge.
Holden rules.

That is pretty damn cool, it was a good car to begin with but this is so much cooler. I would love to have a try at driving it.

I doubt that he gained weight, its more likly that he lost some seing as he took out a lot of the rear half of the car. I'm pretty sure the Holden and Ford Utes are lighter than the Sedan versions.
I agree 100% on the last point about modifiers making the world go round. We need more creative people like these.

Only an Aussie would think of building this, For the money he spent on it he probably could have bought a new SS ute.
I'd take it over a Holden ute! The FPV utes are another story, but damn, it's cool for being a BMW:p
The FPV utes are crap, FPV build good sedans but when compared to the HSV's they are behind. Actually Ford utes in general are not that great.
It doesn't look that good, and something that can smash wallabies to pieces and cart a million cans of Fosters around should not be bearing the BMW badge.
No one over here drinks Fosters, It may well be the worlds most famous beer and a national icon but I have never seen someone drink it before and for good reason (Pissy).
Holden rules.
No kidding.

The utes are lighter than the sedans as they have no rear weight. Structurally they are not quite as strong as sedans but still safe.
For measure my ute (VS) weighs roughly 70kg less than the sedan equivalent.

No kidding, I just noticed that. I thought they would have refabricated a new sheet and removed the doors completely.

I think it's awesome. It's a ute body style, although it retains the awesome look of the E39 M5. It's a neat idea, and I want one.

I called you a n00b because you posted an ignorant comment bitching about something that really should be appreciated due to the amount of work put into it. You have to admit, it's pretty cool.

KthxbaiIf I thought it was pretty cool, I would say so. Plain and simple. I've always been a fan of the E39 M5 (the last great on IMO), so it breaks my heart to see such a well balanced, fantastic performing work of art get chopped to bits to look like Frankenstien. Now I bet it performs as bad as it looks.
Speaking of ignorant.... I couldn't help but notice that you're the Import eater....
From Canada.
Does this mean you eat all cars?

He did it to a 180sx as well and gave the ute GTR-34 Tailights.

Ok, not quite. And although I am biased toward Ford, I respect all the brands of cars equally; domestic or import. Import Eater is pretty much just a space filler.
Enough with the arguing, man. Let's both chill lol.

thats a pretty good conversion, but i wouldn't see why anyone would want to do it. A car is a car, a truck is a truck, y make them together, i jus don't like it that much, its a great job though, but it wouldn't really fit in under trucks or cars. why would they even do this, i mean, whats the point in it?

Jan 02, 2007, 10:19 PM
haha this thing is tough. i reckon it would be awesome for drifting, with all that power to the back end, and basically no weight on the rear wheels. i've seen it done to 180's, 240's and even skylines, but not an M5.

Because of the popularity of utilities in Australia, Better known as 'utes'.

There isn't a single picture of the finished car on the site. The picture shown is a chop, in which they didn't bother to hide the rear doors.
What a waste anyway.
