I thought about this thread a loooong time ago, but I've been awfully busy doing stuff and had no time to make it.

So here goes nothin'!

The origin of the Mercedes-Benz designation "6.3" comes from the late 1960's 300 SEL, with a 6.3 liter V8 making 434lbs/ft of torque at about 3,000rpms, and 300bhp at 4,000rpms.

The idea for the car came from one man, Rudolf Uhlenhaut, he shoehorned a Type 600 Mercedes limo engine into the SEL.

The car could, even weighing about two tons, put the hurt on some Porsche 911 drivers of the era when it came time to run the straights of the autobahn.

Why it's so important

Imagine going to a motor show, not expecting anything incredible from say, Dodge, and *bam*, they break out a 100bhp/liter, Viper-engine-sized Mid-engine, rwd car that's as pure as a crisp spring morning, and as fast as anything ever built. It'd rewrite the rule book on supercars.

That's what the 1968 Geneva Motor Show had:
http://www2.uol.com.br/bestcars/carros/mercedes/antigos/6300_3.jpg

Numerous magazines around the world proclaimed it the best sedan in the world. And without question, it was the fastest.

People say the M series is the original sport sedan, true, they get the handling award, but this one, takes the muscle award.

hmm I guess like the 300SL it was a pioneer when it came to making cars with power, I say that because people see the 300SL as the first true super car. I guess mercedes have kept the same sorta basis/layout to there cars nowadays, but its the main reason I detest them. Huge engine upfront pushing out bucket loads of power, then the car weighs about 1.5-2 tonnes. Personally I think they use huge engines to compensate for the weight, which makes it go as fast as it does. But if the cars weighed less then performance would increase alot. For example, the guy who put the SLR engine in the SLK, and the SLK outdone the Enzo on a straight. SL is meant to stand for sports light right? aint much light about 2 tonnes, which both of the new SL's are. C55 amg is also around 2 tonnes, its main competitor being the M3 and 01-04 Audi RS4... the M3 weighs 1550kg and the RS4 weighs 1650kg. M3 had a 3.2L engine, RS4 was a 2.7L but the C55 was a 5.5. So even tho the car had the biggest engine it would still probably lose to both the M3 and RS4 because of P.W. Ratio. Same goes for the E55, RS6 and M5. Then you got the brabus versions which are stupidly overpowered. 700+bhp in a car that weighs around 2 tonnes? You gotta be stupidly rich to have that sorta car. Like i've said many times, there heavy cars with huge engines to compensate for the weight, plus most of the range are all autos, except maybe the C class. The competition has the upper advantage, thats why u dont see as many AMG models on a daily basis, i don't like them, and unless they change drastically i dont think i ever will. Thinking outside of my own views, mercedes' are still amazingly well engineered smooth driving cars, and will always remain the pioneers of the automotive industry, but the AMG models suck(engines are cool though, just in the wrong sorta cars).

I prefer this over the CLS and even the E-Class.
Although it is old.. but the torque figure is seriously impressive.. its lb-ft and not Nm.

Its earlier than the SEL 6.9 but it is faster than the SEl 6.9 , :)

the C55 actually doesnt weigh as much as u thought.. its "only" 1635kg http://www.rsportscars.com/eng/cars/m_c55amg.asp
both C55 and M3 have lap times of 8:22 on the Nurburgring (or however u spell it..) although the handling of C55 might not be as crisp as M3, its torque can compensate the time it loses during cornering...

Clearly you don't get around much. General consensus pins the Miura as the progenitor of the supercar class.

People see the car as a pioneer, not my own opinion

Fair enough, but I still don't know where you got that idea from.

This car was amazing for its day, and its still amazing today, it had a big engine, which AMG tuned, the base 6.3 did 0-60 in around 5.7 seconds. S-Classes have always been ahead of the class, and back then they were even more advanced.

This S-Class and the 600 (W100) are cars i would love to see up close.

James May called the 300SL the first supercar. Personally I want to believe it because I'm a fanboy, but everybody else don't believe it because a true supercar has to be mid-engined or something.

That 300 SEL rocks. It's a real Mercedes with better build quality than anything else! It came with optional bulletproof windows which was totally crazy back then.

I thought that was only in James Bond movies.. thats great.. Impressive with those technologies.. no doubt that Mercedes should be one of the greatest manufacturer.

Mercedes-Benz has a whole fleet of guard vehicles, if you don't remember i posted a video on the making of the S600 Guard. The make an E-Guard, a G-Guard, and a S-Guard. Each outfitted with protective improvements, including bullet proof windows. The S-Guard has a fresh air supply also.
