View Full Version : Is Ford over doing the mustang?

There are a lot of mustangs out now but what kills me is that they are still trying to come up with more sub models.
There are four V6 models (six with convertibles), three GT models (four with convertibles), the GT500 (and a convertible version). That's eight sub models (19 with convertibles). Now Ford is brining back the 302 and coming out with the FRGT500. That’s 22 sub models of the mustang. If that’s not laying it on a little think nothing is. I love the mustang as much as any Ford guy but I think that if Ford wants to get that serious into performance then they should come up with another car to go along with the mustang.

Hopefully they don't end it. It's gotta be their best seller.

I dont want them to end it, I just want them to pull their heads out of the giant ass that they have somewhere in Nevada and realize that they can't ride this pony forever.

Ford isn't overdoing it in my opinion. The tuners are the ones that need to get peed in their mailboxes.
It sell like hot cookies. I don't mind a box of +500,000 cookies with 22 sub models.

Well there might come a point where they will have too many mustang models that it might start to dilute the brand(like the 3 series) Ford hasn't reached that point yet I think.

You are breaking them down into trim options. Not legitimate variants.
A GT is a GT in convertible or coupe guise.
A 6, is a 6, in coupe or convertible.
Your historically excellent Mustangs have always been many of the variants. I truly hope they explore the following.
Boss 302
Mach1
Cobra (not the GT500)
Bullitt
etc.
Each one is a truly unique variant, offering scalability and unique packaging and performance. Each one slides into a unique niche, and because they utilize a common platform, regardless of the model, everyone is familiar with them. This is precisely what makes Mustangs outstanding cars. This is why import "tuners" choose cars like the Civic too (yeah im not big on civics either, BUT....). There is plenty of packages and differing models, but in essence they are the same, offering unique platforming that is not common with a lot of vehicles.
The Mustang was truly the leader in this area and I feel will continue to be until "Tuning" or "Hot Rodding" or whatever your subjective term is, dies out. Even as there were differences between great cars like the Camaro, none were marketted or laid out so well. Sure if you were a knowledgable buyer of a Camaro you could have had a severely potent car (think COPO), but none were "openly marketed".
I have known people to loathe, and I mean completely HATE the New Edge for instance, but for some reason they LOVE the way a New Edge Mach1 looks, and performs. There's something to be said for that.

Slow you are a man of great words. could not agree more.

I agree with everything Slow said.
Creating more models won't kill the market, it just widens the appeal. And if you think there are lot of trim options now, you would've crapped yourself forty years ago.

AM138 - Bad -> AM138 - N00b -> AM138 - Downright ignorant.
I think that it is a good idea that the Stang has so many trim levels. It's broadening the appeal. There is the base coupe for buyers that want good performance at a very affordable price, and then you can move all the way up to the GT500, for those with a bit more money, and want awesome performance. If there was only the GT, and the GT-500, than there wouldn't be enough choice. People that don't want to spend alot on gas every week but still want OK performance would like the V6. I think having lots of choices is one of the trademarks of the Mustangs. Affordable performance is what you can get.

If we break it down by trim levels, then yes, you're crazy.
If you want to talk completely seperate models, go talk to Porsche's management about the 996 era cars.

Sorry mustang luvas!I kinda agree if we're talkin' new Mustangs... but it's not relevant to the topic.
Shelby is over doing the Mustang. There are two GT500's, an anniversary version, a Hertz and a Shelby GT... all of them came out of 2006.
I don't think Ford is over doing it. The new giugiugiugiuggaro Mustang is not really a Mustang variant as it doesn't really exist. It's a one-off.

I think they are kinda over doing it because what a truly muscle/sports car need is the performance. The V6 version of the Mustang doesn't offers much. Most of the Europeans still prefer a Z4 more although their prices are around the same. I'm still gonna prefer the Z4 more (I'm not a Eurosnob alright). What V6 Mustang has is just the name.. no all time Mustang performance and they look okay.. not that bad but also not that good.

The V6 S197 has 210hp. Thats 15 shy of a stock 87-93 5.0. They move decently. Every Mustang has been offered with a 6 cylinder version. This has been the way they have been sold since the beggining. It offers a great car, for a bargain price.

My dad's '99 V6 'vert can attest to that, what with 80 miles of driving everyday all year long in crappy conditions and still running pristine as it was new. 130k on the odometer and not a fuss.

Dudes, how can you have too much Mustang?? For one, it's great for FoMoCo because they can make lots of different cars for lots of different people and make money on all of them because of it. Not a lot of nameplates can pull that off. Besides, the V6 Mustang may very well be a secretary car, but the chassis is a really great platform for making a helluva sleeper car. The aftermarket and crate engine market for Mustang's is unbelievable, and having a V6 styled mustang with GT500 powertrain sure sounds appealing to me.

God, the Mustang has alot to do with affordable performance, right? Well some people don't have the money to put gas into the 4.6. The V6 is there for people that are on a smaller budget, yet still want good performance. You should know what the hell you're talking about before you make such a strong protest.

On top of that the 6 cylinder was one of the first engines to be put in the Mustang. The same can be said about the Camaro/Firebird. It would be downright stupid of Ford to cut the V6 Stang.

If it's based on a Ford Falcon, it should ride and handle a million times better than now.
HOWEVER: FOR GODS SAKE, NO WAGONS!!!!!!!

You think because it's made in Australia it's going ride and handle any better than than the Mustang made in the US?
The 05 + Mustang is NOT the same Mustang that rode around on the same chassis from 1979-2004. It's an all new chassis from the gound up and handles just fine, thank you.

I like the new Mustang GT and the Shelby GT 500. Thats it. I dont like the v6, or last generation's body style.
Mustang GT is on my list of prospective cars to buy next year. I'm researching to see if thats the best choice. Also thinking about a Subaru STi. If I got the stang I wouldnt drive it much though. Probably on the weekends. I heard they are making an all-new mustang in about 3 years.
I voted yes to 'are they overdoing it' because there are too many variations. Im not a car historian or anything and I just recently started looking to buy a Mustang but Ive seen a Mustang v6, Mustang GT, Cobra, Saleen, Shelby. Its the tuners who are making the last three i listed.. if im not incorrect. Also they are contemplating making a 4 door and wagon version. Bad idea.
It is my opinon, but I beleive they should cut back production on the Mustang. Its too saturated. When I see a Subaru STi (other car on my list), im like 'wow i only see one of those every now and then'. Its everyday I see some form of the mustang. If they made less of them, yes that would drive their sales numbers down but it would also increase demand and raise the status of it and they could possibly do a 3-5k price increase with people still buying them. I am sure plenty of people on this forum will disagree with me but im normally the type of person that comes up with crazy ideas. From a business standpoint I think it could work though.

All they have to cut out is the V6 models to make it so that you only see them every now and then. The rest are expensive enough to keep it pretty exclusive. BTW, I see alot of WRX\STI's around lately.

On top of that the 6 cylinder was one of the first engines to be put in the Mustang. The same can be said about the Camaro/Firebird. It would be downright stupid of Ford to cut the V6 Stang. The first Mustang had 3 engine options... one 6 cylinder and two V8's... The first Camaro had either a 230 I6, a 250 I6, two different 327's, a 302, two different 350's, two different 396's, and a 427. The only reason I can see that Ford should keep the V6 is to keep prices on the base model low enough for school kids to afford. That's not a joke btw...
