I was just surfin the web and checkin out some cars that I'm not familiar with...and BAM...I ended up in lexus.com! Wow! BTW, I checked out their SUV section and took a look with their 2007 GX and saw this as one of their interior picture. I was wondering what's that thing sticking out at the upper right of the transmission. Can anyone tell me? Please!

If you mean the "LNH" stick, that's for the "low" gears and "high" gears and I believe the "N" might be like neutral or something. I remember that extra stick in the 1980's Chevrolet Suburban (dad used it a couple times when he was driving on dirt and stuff).

I think that's the slow-high speed gears for offroading.

So thats the purpose of it...well thanks anyways! No wonder my dad liked the old 2001-2004 4runners, cuz this "LNH" thing installed by the side of the transmission.

its allows you to change the ratio low (l) for off-roading and high (h) for normal N is just a formality

well alot of 4x4s have them now already...but at first they were not like this, they were like automatic gear levers, and they move the same, not like the pic you posted, similar to the manual gear thing...hope you get what i meant..:D

Why would a luxury SUV have that? No lexus owner is going offroading.

They are suposed to look like a tough off roader that can beat a Hummer H1 in terrain. The gear reduction-thingie adds to that, and it's some useful everyday stuff during the winter.

All i know is that if its got like L4 or H4 or N2 or something, its low 4WD and L2 is low 2wd or something. It must be confusing to change gears, darn, i just switched my gearing

well i think that looks bad.....most cars have buttons for that..the lever just make it crowded and honestly what lexus owner will use that for off roading....sure itll be good for winter and things like that but other then that its pointless......why wouldnt they just use the buttons instead?

L is for 4 wheel drive low... In case you need to get out of mud or pull a tree stump out of the ground or something... lol
H is for 4 wheel high... normal 4x4 driving...
N is for neutral... if you have a pto powered winch or other device them you put it in Neutral so the device can be powered by the engine without the vehicle moving..

well that lever is for transferring the torque of the car to the front or back by moving the lever, thats what i heard from TV..:D

In that case I would advise not to rely on TV too much.
Monkey is right. The H/L lever (had one in a landrover once) is for changing from high to low gearing and back. Trucks have them as well.
