I am looking to see if anyone knows anything about the Peugeot 306R4 Rally car. I can find virtually no info on the car, just 1 or 2 pictures. It would also seem that there is only one of these cars at the moment in use in the UK.
I want to know really what the specifications are, and how easy the conversion would be to make a road 306 into the rallying 306R4. All that I know is that the engine is mid mounted (Cosworth Engine?) and it uses special body panels!
Also any other pictures would be great! This car is driven by Andy Burton .

Hello there!
Right. For a start the Peugeot 306 GTi 6 was not built for homologation! The GTi 6 came out in 1997.
http://www.puntopower.com/images/florio2003/florio_28.jpg
The 306 Maxi (above) that was competed as the Peugeot rally car before they went main stream with the 206 was part of the mid 1990's "F2" rally cars! And was homologated back in 1994! There were all sorts. Escorts based on late model RS2000's, Renault Megane’s etc.
And they had a very loose configaration to the actual road going cars. Some of the manufactures didn't even bother to make any of their cars similar, some, like Hyundai took it a lot more seriously.
Anyway about the 306R4. As you can see in the picture, it carries a “Q” registration plate. That means that it was basically a totally custom built car. Used to crop up on lots of Escorts I remember. And Renault 5’s. Normally meant that the owner had totally replaced the engine with one of another manufacturer or one that wasn’t offered by the manufacturer in that range. And as you said, that 306R4 had a mid mounted engine, and if memory serves me right it was actually a 3500cc engine out of the mighty Metro 6R4. It was originally built for the British Rally Championship by a guy named Andy Burton. I think! Now however it is competing in the 2004 British Rallycross championship! Where it should do well, as the Metro 6R4 was very successful along with the Ford RS200 when they got banned from the World Rally scene. Hence the Group B13 bit!!
As for building one yourself! Well GOODLUCK!!! If you want one like the pictures, try to contact the guy who runs it in the BRCX and see if he will point you in the direction of the original builder(s). If not maybe he can point you in the right direction. But first I would go out and find several Metro 6R4’s. Don’t worry too much about the body work but you will need to make sure that there transmission, four wheel drive system and manic turbo charged V8 engine are all ok. Then figure out how to get a 306 body round it and keep it cool all at the same time! Oh and check the homologation rules. It has been so very long since anyone actually built a 6R4 new that I wouldn’t mind betting that it slipped out of homologation years ago! I know for the old group A rally cars, late model Escort, Lancia Delta etc, only had 7-8 years of homologation left after the last road going version had been made! And I shudder to think what you would have to do to that truly ancient Rover 3.5 litre, turbo charged V8 to make it road legal!!!!!!! If you do decide to go for it, get it entered in the Rallycross. Would really help to liven that show up a bit!
If you can’t/don’t want to use Metro 6R4 running gear, then maybe think about sticking an old Escort Cosworth running gear in it. I have heard of people dropping 2litre Cosworth turbo’s into 306’s with not that many problems. Just wouldn’t be all that rare then that’s all!! Or you could go real bonkers and stick the engine from a Clio V6 and four wheel drive system from an Audi S3 in it…
You’ve got me thinking now! :D 8) :P

OOPS!
The 6R4 was a V6 hence the name! It was the 3.5 V8 with two cylinders chopped off!
Damn I am so forgetful sometimes! :x

Wo!! Thanks for that!! I know it took loads of searching, I spent several hours hunting for info with no real luck. I am less likely to be building one for a while, as space and lack of racing licence yet would make it a silly project!! I know of several Metro 6R4's but they are in mint condition and would be a shame to cut up!! The trouble is £££'s, and i've not got much of it!! So I was thinking of building a Ford RS200 kit-car, which is identical to the original Grp B rally car (still need to build it somewhere!), so it is more suitable for road use, and then I can get a racing lisence and practice with it!! Then I can go for the more extreme 306R4!!
Thanks for the info above, I will follow it up anyway, for future use!
Stage 1 is to get a driving license!!

uh, i would think the rs200 would be a little wilder than the 306, but it depends on what rs200 you make

Well yes, there are 2 versions I know of, one is based on an Austin Maestro Turbo and the other is a complete build using original dimensions.
I would use it "as is" and not convert it to a 306R4!! Why do that when you got a classic Group B racer
