Some of you who are looking for minor power adders, you guys are fine, but I see a few posts every now and then who make referances towards doubling engine HP, and adding big turbos, and supercharges..... This ovservation is for you........

How are you going to get that power to the ground? Before you go and add all this power, one thing you may want to consider is your transmissions..... When auto manufactures roll a car off an assembly line, the engine is matched to your transmissions.... If you have a stick shift , usually thats easier to upgrade, and beef up as usually the clutch is the first thing replaced.
But if you have an Auto, and are adding any size turbo, do yourself a favor, and dig a little info about your transmission. Transmissions are rated by the amount of torque they can handle, so if your making 300 ft/lbs of torque, but your tranny is only set up to handle 200 ft/lbs, you may want to consider upgrades here as well.....

I only mean this post to help you, I would hate to see anyone spend $2 & $3k and forget about their tranny, only to have it fail later.......

Good point intlcutlass, people never considered the Transmission :?

I don't understand the confused face at the end of your post...... Or is that the confused look of "what the hell happened?!" when you leave your tranny in the middle of the road?

I mean know one ever gave a thought of what will happen if they tune they car a lot but not think of the transmission, I'm mean that's stupid.

A friend of mine left his axle in the middle of the track.... not tranny related, but you know your making power when you can snap an axle in two.....thank god thats his track car and not his daily driver........it's a 12.49 1/4 Chevy Z-24 ......

God I hope some one calls BS on me here....

Well, whats more complicated. Making pwoer or putting it to the ground. I'd say the making power part, so that's probably why it's the most discussed. Anyway, I for one don't really feel the need to talk about "duh" stuff when modifying a car. I'm worrieda bout how to squeeze every last ounce of power out of a certain engine. Duh, you need 'beefier' parts to handle this increased engine out put. Kinda like when you talk about getting larger wheels for your car you don';t mention having to recalibrate the speedometer or when you say you'd like to upgrade your brakes you don't mention the spacers you might need to clear the wheels. It IS somehting that I need to do more research on though, I;m not nearly as well oriented with transmission upgrades as engine and engine management companies and whatnot. But I do see your point. My room mate was driving around one day and he into cars as well. We were talking about cars, engines specifically, and he suddenly comes up with "oh, you know, you need a good transmission too". I was dumbfounded. It's like he totally didn't make the connection that you NEED the connection for higher performance cars. I dunno, it's always been a "gimmie" to my mind.

I agree with you, it should be a "gimmie", I just don't see a lot of people refering to it......

Very reasonable point intlcutlass. I have always been saying that when you upgrade engine power alot, then you must definitely upgrade clutch, gearbox, tyres, suspension etc...
