View Full Version : I''ve decided on my next car. Evo 8? NO. STi? NO. 350Z?..

I've been tossing the idea around in my head as to which car am I gonna buy next. I finally decided the 350z. I still felt it was a little too new, needed more upgrades, and will be tweaked in the next few years to come by Nissan to become more refined. But I couldnt help think one thing...Damn $30,000 is a lot to spend on my first project car. Hell, I would be scrounging to afford modifications. I would cry if I messed something up and killed my car. So instead I think im going with.....a 240 SX conversion to a S13 SR20DET Silvia. I could spend half as much as I would a 350z and have a much faster car. Of course not as good looking or as new but much easier on the pockets and should equal out to be more fun. I think I will wait a few more years before I think of buying a 350z. The bottom end on the motor if strong and the Silvia conversion shouldnt be too difficult to come by.
Why is this a "technical" subject? Im hoping anyone could lend any expertise or advice on such a conversion. I hammered out the costs at a local car shop and everything should go ok. I just have to find a 240 for a good price. The car is RWD and the majority of the modification will go into the turbos and head work. The car also can share parts with a skyline and a 300zx. Seem like a good idea?

That does sound better than gpgin for the 350Z - its a fantastic car - but its a brand new car and its expensive, 2 things that dont normally appear in a first car for modifcation.

And the 240SX, although ive never seen one (im in UK) there does seem to be some great modified ones

Youll save money, and get a faster car as you say, so the choice is easy.

Also if you buy the 350Z and then you end up skimping for the new parts - thats a bad idea as you dont want to buy sub-standard parts in your £25k 350Z

F1...the 240 SX.

I think its the best decision. Im not sure how long it will take to make the 350z as potent as the Supra but in time I think it will be if not better. But I dont think the Z will see much power until compression is dropped much lower than the stock 10.3:1. I agree with you mallon....no reason to skimp on parts.

I cant wait til I have my 240. I really hope that thing so smoothly with the engine swap. I hope the engine I get from Japan is solid. Anyone know how much rear LSD's cost?

One of my good friends has a 240SX, he bought it used and he really likes it. He replaced about $10,000 under the hood, and it's really fast. It's a nice ride too, quick, and turns some heads. I would recommend buying one of those over the 350Z. I mean, $30,000 for a car that has way too much room to change is way too much. Welll, it's all up to you, and good luck with it :)

Yep. But its not really all that fast yet. It has some time to go b/4 we see a mean 350.

Shanemb, I really hope your just messing around when you say the 350z isnt a fast car and I really cant beleive that youd get a 240 over the 350. That really is just pure ludicrious. The 350Z is one of the finest made TRACK cars you attain today at a reasonable price (UNDER 30K). Plus, they have have excellent tuner packages for 350 also. (STILLEN!). Get the 350 you wont be dissapointed.

For only 12K I already have a faster car than the 350z and the infinity G35. Plus my car has much more potential than either the 350z or the G35 does right now. Even if they did have potential the VQ35 will cost 2X as much to upgrade than my car. I need one turbo manifold, one turbo, on intake manifold, one throttle body. Simple and cheap. The 350z needs two of everyting. The turbo kits and the stillen kit only can run about 6 psi of boost b/c the entire engine would have to be pulled apart to put in new pisons and lower the compression ratio...not to mention if its oiling capabilities are up to snuff like a real turbo motor is. Plus there would be real debate as to whether a 350z could out-handle a Silvia. Really money is the driving factor behind me getting a Silvia. Second is the 350z and G35 arent that good YET. A couple more years when Nissan finally gets the ball rolling with the VQ35 and the new Skyline rolls out will we see the real potential for the VQ35/ 350z/ G35. Until then I will stick with proven, cheap, and simple.

the money for the 350z it worth the price instead of the convertion...you dont get latest technologies applied inside the cars nowadays so is best to get a new car for ride comfort and better performance....
in terms of chassis the 350z is definately better

I cant claim my car is luxurious in any way. But trust me....if you rode in it you would be surprised. I wouldnt take a 350z over my car. Not yet anyway.

Well being a lucky owner of a 350Z it seems made for you to want a Silva which is not as sure footed as either G35 or 350z . Taking about increasing power to a 350z, forget about twin turbo charges think super charger I have seen a project were a supercharger is fitted - around an extra 100bhp - so taking 350z up to around 400 bhp for little cost? . If you want a cheap project try 300zx over here only around £ 6-8000.00 for a 4/5 year model, this already has twin turbo charges but these can be up graded to give not far of 500 bhp!!!
