Which VW GTi do you prefer, the old '83 Rabbit GTi or the new '03 GTi.
Plus, if anybody can find the specs for the '83 it would be helpful.

For a race track I'll take the old one,but for every day comfort and relax I'll take the new one.
the old one is more Pure this car weights something like 800 KG with 1600 cc engine 120 HP.

I'd also take the '03 car because it's newer, safer, more comfortable and generally a very good car. However, I'd like to have a ride in the old one too, to see how it feels... :)

I would definitely take the '83 because of the power to weight ratio and its agility

yo guys are all kidding yourselves if you say youd take the 83 over the 03.
Its a nice thoought that you would do sometthing like that but you never would.
the 83 would be (relative to the 03) uncomfortable, noisey, underequipted, and ugly.
The only up that the 83 has over the 03, is straight line speed, but around a track without ESP e.t.c. the 83 would get frazzeled.

LOL Mallon is right!

Yeah, Mallon, youre probably right but i still say the 83 because, even though it is less comfortable and modern, it still has more personality and is more appealing to me. Comparing the cars based on modern electronic features is unfair, and basing your opinion solely on that is like saying that you would choose a 2003 Mercedes SL over a 1955 Mercedes SL because it has traction control, power steering, and ABS

i dont see why thats unfair -
thats like saying its unfair to judge which model is best on their looks.

Old cars might have more personality, but new cars are better overall.

I would like to have the body of the '83 with a new chassis, suspension, power, and drive train. I am very fond of any GTi(it's as old as I am  !) and agree that the original has alot more personality. But a 0-60 time of 9.3 seconds doesn't appleal to my lust for performance.
It will be hard for me to choose between a new GTi and the upcoming R32 though. AWD is soooo sexy.

I agree with Porsche's...but VW's???I don't really think so.Some BMW's and Mercedes have their own sound. But VW have a quite common sound on their engines.

definetly, you can laways tell when something like an A4/A6/Golf/Passat Deisel is coming round the corner. The sound of the turbo in particular.

Oh,I think that you said that for fun right?Don't tell me that you are serious.
This diesel engine by VW group?I can hear an Opel Vectra 1.9d(Isuzu's engine) and a new one Skoda Superb 1.9TD and it's the same sound. We don't have new diesel Audi's here as taxi's or normal cars.I didn't see an A4(NEW)TD here in Greece.

Schumi don't forget that diesel cars are not allowed in Athens and Thessaloniki, that's why you haven't seen one. And you can always tell the sound of a turbo. It's like a whistle.
Schumi

No I am saying that these sounds ARE same.No we have some diesel cars here(TAXI's and other country cars).
I can recognize a diesel car if its sound is different and VW diesel sound is too common.
Let's say that Mercedes Benz C220 Diesel and I mean this model:
http://backoffice.one2car.com/carreg/image/13_9_2002/I12023001num3DSCF0003.JPG has a different sound as a diesel engine.I can recognize this sound of this car from miles away. But VW's?????

why do you find this so hard to believe??
VW diesels have a very distinctive sound.

I didn't say that this is hard to believe.I heared the engines and I have an opinion.
I think that the VW engines sound is TOO common...

LOL look what i've started :? , but yes VW turbo diesels have a very distinct sound that goes, tick,tick,tick... its suprising though that a 98 VW turbodiesel sounds quieter then an 98 mercedes E class diesel

it doesnt suprise me - VW group have the best diesels in the world. Followed by BMW i think.

I think that the best diesel engines are te Japanese diesel engines...

Sep 06, 2003, 7:02 PM
No way. Japanese almost don't have any diesels.

Well said. The Model T Ford had personality too but nobody would say it is a better car than a ferrari enzo.
The 83 GTI was a pioneer ( I know, I owned a 1984 Rabbit GTI)...but over time the car has evolved with improvements. I thinks the cars mission has changed a bit though. It's no longer supposed to be a pure pocket rocket..it is now more of a comfortable good handling road car. ( although VW is starting to go back to the pocket rocket days with the 2005 GTI)

I recently purchased an 1983 Volkswagen Rabbit Gti Convertible... I was wondering which engine would be better for it... the 16V or the VR6? any suggestions on what I should do to the car would be appreciated as well. It is completely stock right now.
