Hello everybody,
I am C0B0 ( thats not my real name  ) and i come from Slovenia ( a tinny country in central europe ). Drag racing has become very popular in our country because there are now LEGAL drag races ( for amateurs ) organised so that everyone can enter. For now there have only been 1/8 mile drags but 1/4 are on the way. So if anyone knows of any GOOD results in the 1/8 mile drag i would like to know which car and the time. The record in our country ( for now - keep in mind theese are ordinary streetcars and we only had 2 drags for now ) is 8.7 seconds by a 204bhp Opel Calibra. So if anyone should know of any good results please reply.

but it aint no drag racing car !!!!
being four wheel drive may make it a slow starter, but its still a very very good if not great drag car...

well its a drag race isnt all about the start.
how come shes good in drag races ....
compared a similarly powered car RWD and a suitable gearbox, the RWD drive would win.

I saw a fairly stock WRX drag at an import drag show. It did 12's. Not bad. Similarly I saw a 90' something Eclipse outdrag a 900 hp supra. How...all four wheels digging in. Yeah, more wheels = more drag but you gotta keep the power down. All the rear wheel drive cars spun rubber. Sorry to hate on the Supra...its still one of my fav's. I just cant argue with all wheel drive. Its awesome.

nah RWD is better at something like drag ( sure look at the top of the range purpose built drag racers, they've evoved to be only RWD)
The resaon is that a 4 WD car has to get momentum before you can floor it. It would put too much strane on the gearbox e.t.c. - think about it, there is twice as much force being exerted on the ground. - so withot doubt RWD is better than 4WD :D

Best times in a drag race
about less than 4 second in a quater mile and about 350mph
car- Budwiser Top fuel rail car
Horsepower- 7000+
This is definatly the most inefficent sport in the world. After every race you have to take apart the $50,000 engine and rebuild it. Your clutch is totally melted. It wastes about 20 gallons of fuel every ten seconds. The fuel costs about $4,000 dollars a gallon.
So, if you don't have millions of dollars and a natinal sponsor, this might be out of your leauge. If you want an inexpensive racer, try an american muscle car. They might take about 15 miles to the gallon, but if you want to go really fast in a straight line, you an american car. A 67-70 Chevrolet Camaro are excellent choices. Get some pretty wide tyres on it and you got a turn key racer. The engines are extremely simple, so it's easy to rebuild if nessicary. The parts for it are pretty numerous actually.
If you want a car with a little more fuel efficancy, go for a pocket rocket. We don't get much here in the states, but an SVT focus or a Civic Type R are pretty good choices. However, dragracing comes with its difficulties, too. Everytime you race, you take a gamble. Even if you have a $100,000 engine, you still have the risk of blowing the heads or dropping a piston or even destryong your driveshaft. If the last happens, you can't even mose your car! So, becareful if your driving your own car there and race it. If something happens, your walking. So if you have a friend with a truck and trailer, it would be wise to bring him along.

8.90 @ 163 mph - Titan Motorsports Supra
Second Supra in the 9's running the Tilton clutch. First Supra in the 8's with a 6 speed. No nitrous, GReddy T88H. Driven through a 6speed transmission and stock differential. There will be more to come when the boost controller gets cranked.

yeah everyone knows supras are really fast, but if you want to get serious horsepower, i mean SERIOUS HORSEPOWER, you gotta go with a V-8. Top fuel rail cars get 7000+ hp without a turbo or nitrous. theres only so much horsepower you can get out of a 4 popper.

well, i just have two put my 2 cents in this. Yes the v8 and v's period can have outragous amounts of hp on n/a its all about what you do to them. i have seen a turbo 400 hp (122 ci's) bet a viper with 600 hp (505 ci's) on n/a. how you ask? civics as we all know have the great and powerful v-tec valve timing control. used just right with a turbo and anything can happen if you know your boost controller and v-tec controller. if you do it right you can set it up to have the v-tec go off on take off to get your intial jump off the line, then, have the turbo spool up on the v-tec downtime and fill in the gap betwwen turbo lag and valve timing. combined with the higher rpms of a 4 banger and the front wheel drive (and of course the civic is as light as a ****in hot wheel car) thats doesnt lose any power in a drive line tunnel. pretty damn amazing but if you ask me n/a is alot funner and challenging my first was a 70's chevy nova 350 over bored to 355 with 400 on n/a. my next plan is a 2003 civic si and im gonna run it n/a ill let you all know how it goes.
the extra boost is coming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! prepare to drive!!!

I see what you talking about, but i still like the V-8. Again, you don't see amny real dragsters using a 4 cylinder VTEC. This has nothing to do about engines, but you reminded me about somehting when you mentioned the viper. The first time i went to my local dragstrip, i saw a viper run. It was pretty fast, doing maybe 12 seconds flat on a good run, stock. But, after every run, he put maybe 25 bags of ice all around the engine to keep it from over heating. So, like i said in an ealier post, racing witht the car you came with isn't a good idea. If you break it, your walking home.

hey mopar man im not downing you opion on mopars but theres a car i think you should have included in your list of best. have you ever seen a 69' yenko camaro ZL-1? only 69 of them where made because they have an all aluminum 427!!!!!!! they weight 3,300 lb's stock and run 11's stock!!! the only problem is they cost about 150,000 nowadays and most people wont race them cause the engines are hand built..................but, if it was me id race the think ever damn night!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes. I've heard of '69 Yenko's with the ZL1 engine option. It's amazing, but all the cars on my list are alot closer to my heart than the yenko. My dad had a '68 Coronet R/T, so naturally, I'm a mopar guy. I had to put it second because the '68 Charger was by far the best car ever made. No questions asked. And the '65 Mustang 350 "R" code was the absolute coolset looking mustang ever to grace the asphalt of america. I was actually going to put the '69 Corvette ZL1 on the list, but Mallon wanted me to have only 3. I had ten at one point. The ZL1 Corvette had the same engine as the Yenko you disscused, but only two were made. Only one survives. It was conviscated from a drug dealer in Miami. It's worth $300,000 some odd dollars.
And yes, the ZL1 was an amazing engine. All aluminum. I thiunk it was pushing somehting like 600hp to the rear wheels. If i had a ZL1 Corvette or a ZL1 Yenko Camaro, I'd probaly drag race it, but i would be pulling 30 second runs becuase i wouldn't want to crash! Or, i'd put the ZL1 into a regular '69 camaro. It would still desimate, but you wouldn't have to worry about it exploding or crashing or somehting. Because all that yenko badging makes that camaro $50,000 more than the other one.

Drag racing is all about the start and traction.
I don't care if you have 800hp if you can't put it to the ground your going to get a crappy time.
A AWD car in the hands of a good driver will beat most RWD cars atleast till the 1/8 mile mark.
For example I have a auto Z28 and I have beaten about 90% of the 6speed Z28s ive raced not because I have more power but because I have better traction from the start and I had drag radials which gave me awesome launches.
Way to many people overlook traction and good tires when it comes to drag racing.

those 7000 horsepower monsters use "nitromethane" fuel. and burn 12 gallons of it in one quarter mile race. quarter milels in 4 seconds pretty damn quick.
here's a linky to one of those types.

I predict the new Pontiac GTO will be a good dragster. Besides having a beautiful interior, it has a all-aluminum 350 hp, 360-ft-lbs of torque V-8 stock.
Also, the Mustang SVT Cobra has some muscle. 390hp
