I think it's pretty sweet. 200 hp turbocharged inline-4, and 207 lb-ft of torque from 1800 rpm - 5000 rpm <- awesome torque curve.
here's a review:

You should also check out the new R32:

This is essentially the current generation golf that debuted in 2005, only turbocharged now.

Very nice...VW might be making some good choices..

NOW!! all they need to do is make a R32 version of this...and i'll considering buying a VAG Turd..

It is coming from what I hear, but it will not be called the R32. Instead it will be the R36. And it will have upwards of 280-300 hp. This isnt until '08 at least though.

the new r32 is out. look at the second post(first reply).

the R36 is the "american version" of the actual nedw R32 but with the pasatt v6 engine making 280-300hp to be released in 07-08........

Yea I know the new R32 is out, but like you said, only in Europe and not to be released in the US. I was just saying that the US will instead be seeing the R36 in the near future.

I didnt know that they were going to use the Passat V6 though, I just knew it would be some sort of V6. This is interesting.

IMO the new R32 doesnt have that ''look'' of the older R32 and seems a bit soft..

The new GTI I'm pretty sure is worth it. It's loads better then the old one, which as just a big, fat and slow embarrasment to the GTI badge.

The new one is really great and fun too.

I've heard the R32 provides less in the fun departmen, mainly because it has 4WD and thus you wont get all that tail out action, instead you'll be able to push it to it's limits.

does anyone know when this generation of the GTi came to Canada? I only saw one recently although I knew this generation came out last year...Here they still sell the older generations of the golf but the new generation of the GTi, I just checked the site...

The current generation VW Golf weighs twice as much as the Golf 1.
The Golf 1 GTI had 150 HP. 300 HP on the current Golf won't be producing anything we haven't seen before.

Mar 21, 2006, 11:45 AM
really? 1. series had only 700kg? I was thinking its about 900kg.
Anyway Golf 1 gti was adventure to drive..now it all so soficticated there lack real feel of speed.

Eh..nevermind..The R32 is a dissappointment..

The GTi seems like a better car than the R32...which is completely back asswards of the past gen..

The last R32 made you WANT a R32..this one is kinda like..

the first GTI had 110 HP.

yeah, weighing half was being a bit rude, yet the car was sub 1000 kilo and the current one is over 1500 kilo. Adding a little weight I don't mind but adding over half of the cars weight again is way beyond what I see as acceptable.

I wasn't quite sure about the 150 HP. Was it the golf GTI MK 2 that had 150 HP then?

Yeah, anyways, still can't give a fart about any new VW golf being produced as long as they keep gaining weight.

^I hear its because for the money it isnt better enough than the GTI to justify buying it. Ive never seen a R32 here they are so rare, ferraris are more common

well the old r32 was really nice sounding when it pulled out of anywhere and yes, it is a bit softer looking than the old one. well first theres the body kit which isnt bad but a bit funny looking, and then it just looks a couple centimeters taller than the last one. R36 looks like something to look into i guess

WORTH IT??
It certainly is. It's meant to be absolutely great to drive, with barely noticable turbo lag and an engine that gives the impression of being a six when it's only a four! And that's forgetting the DSG gearbox that you can have. It also looks great (with some of the most gorgeous alloys available on any car today) and that lovely retro GTI badge on the front. It has a nice interior, with more retro touches in the tartan seats, and is all in all probably the best hot hatch you can buy.
Unless you can stretch to the R32...

well if i get one, which i probably will instead of the si, should i get the auto with DSG or manual?

The DSG is a very good award winnig transmition but I'd still take the good old stick shift over it.

Go with your own preference on this one, the VAG DSG system is the only paddle-shift system that I've heard about without any bad reviews. It's apparently the perfect paddle shift system.

Volkswagen annouced the new R32 engine to deliver 250 hp.
Wrong news cause Evo mag, while testing the car, was able to find that the total power of the car was around 217 hp! [-X

Anyway I think it's a great car!

You have to realise that Volkswagen quotes engine power from the flywheel, and EVO test the engine figures from the wheels - there would be a slight power drop.

^But it stills aounds like VW were bending the truth a bit.
Does it really take 33HP to spin the drivetrain.
If it wern't AWD I would be suspicious.

Top Secret
Mar 26, 2006, 7:43 AM
You'd be suprised just how much driveline losses are. It's something like 13% of the flywheel-quoted power.

Which, using my handy-dandy TI-83, is 217.5HP.

Mar 26, 2006, 8:04 AM
Wow I never knew they lost so much power.

vmax
Mar 26, 2006, 8:09 AM
do all manufacturers measure from the flywheel then?

Top Secret
Mar 26, 2006, 8:09 AM
Yes. They use a special engine dyno to gain official specs of a car.

Goyc
Mar 26, 2006, 10:44 AM
I read somewhere manual gearbox+diferentical have about 85-90% of efishency so 10-15% goest to waste. With automatic gearbox up to 20% can be lost.

VR6 Man
Mar 26, 2006, 3:23 PM
Yeah, all car companies measure from the flywheel and we all measure from the wheels usually when comparing dyno runs. My car has 240 hp at the crank but only about 210-215 hp at the wheels.

o wow thats some news for ya. i had no idea. its like when the TL first came out. pops got it like the 2nd week it was released and thought it had like 270 hp... turned out it was around 258-260
ehh but still awsome car
anyway, thats a massive power loss to the wheels. im gonna go to VW soon and check it out first hand. PS: any road test reviews done by anyone here?

A guy on my VW forum did a road review. If I can find it I will post it. And all cars have that power loss through the drive train, just so you dont think its a VW specific thing.

Thats why some people get carbon fiber drive shafts, and lightened flywheels. They not only help the engine accelerate faster, but since there is less weight for the motor to turn more power gets to the ground.

*Edit*
Found the thread. Haha, its a really short description but if you read on you might get more info on it. Or join and ask on the site.

I'm sorry Americans, but you're missing out. Here in the UK, our MK5 Golf GTi's go 153mph, but for the American market, they will be limited to just 130mph.

Thats what they've always been limited to here in the US. Or at least in that area, cause my Jetta would hit the speed limiter at 135mph.

Yea, that topic got off on a major tangent. Yea, most European cars are limited at 155, but for some reason VW has it at 130.
